Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Ecology Manager to join the Bramford Twinstead Network Optimisation (BTNO) project, within our Power Transmission and Distribution business. The BTNO project is a flagship Power Transmission upgrade for National Grid and enables new wind and nuclear power to connect to the grid. You will be the strategic lead for the delivery of the Natural Environment (Ecology, Biodiversity, Arboriculture) objectives on BTNO. This pivotal role, leading a team of experts, will be to ensure outstanding performance and realise innovative opportunities for our ambitious natural environment objectives.

The role will be largely site-based from our new office facilities in Assington, Suffolk. We offer some flexible working and subsistence arrangements for those working away from home.

What you’ll be doing

  • Provide project leadership on natural environment features and disciplines, ensuring accountability, collaboration, and a Nature Positive mindset across all project phases.
  • Manage Natural Environment deliverables for comprehensive integration into project delivery, ensuring compliance with standards and strategic objectives.
  • Oversee performance and deliver technical assurance through audits, inspections, and quality reviews, maintaining adherence to the Business Management System (BMS).
  • Act as a trusted advisor to Project Directors and senior stakeholders, offering strategic guidance on compliance, natural environment opportunities, and Nature Positive practices to influence decision-making.
  • Lead stakeholder collaboration, fostering strong relationships with clients, regulators, and subcontractors to ensure alignment and compliance.
  • Provide technical guidance and reporting on sustainability performance, translating data into actionable improvements and ensuring accurate KPI reporting via applicable systems.
  • Coordinate subcontractor activities and compliance requirements, promoting innovation and best practice across the supply chain.

Who we’re looking for

  • Experience in Nature Conservation, Ecology, Biodiversity or closely related fields.
  • Technical expert in Natural Environment disciplines, such as Ecology or Biodiversity.
  • Proven record of successful team management, strong leadership and dedicated support for colleagues’ professional development.
  • Very strong understanding on UK wildlife and environmental legislation and comprehensive knowledge of relevant industry standards.
  • Experience of complex, large scale infrastructure projects and extensive knowledge of environmental mitigation processes and practices.
  • Degree in Ecology / Arboriculture or related field preferred.
  • Holder or eligible for Chartered Environmentalist accreditation or similar (e.g. Chartered Ecologist).
  • Protected Species licence holder including Named Ecologist experience desirable.
