The RRV Crane Controller is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of Road Rail Vehicles (RRVs) fitted with lifting equipment on rail infrastructure projects. This role ensures compliance with all relevant safety standards, operational procedures, and industry regulations while supporting the delivery of works within agreed timescales.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the appointed Crane Controller for RRV lifting operations in accordance with Network Rail standards.
  • Plan and oversee lifting activities, ensuring compliance with lift plans and safe systems of work.
  • Conduct pre-use checks and verify equipment certification before operations commence.
  • Liaise with Machine Operators, Site Supervisors, and Safety Critical staff to coordinate activities.
  • Monitor lifting operations to ensure adherence to safety protocols and intervene where necessary.
  • Maintain accurate records of lifting operations, including risk assessments and lift plans.
  • Report any incidents, near misses, or equipment defects promptly in line with company procedures.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • PTS Competence (Personal Track Safety) – valid and in-date.
  • Proven experience in RRV operations and crane control within a rail environment.
  • Knowledge of Network Rail standards and lifting regulations.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work as part of a safety-critical team.

Desirable:

  • BTA (Basic Track Awareness) – advantageous for working in adjacent areas.
  • ICI (Industry Common Induction) – desirable for broader site access.
  • Lift Planning or Appointed Person training (preferred).
  • First Aid certification.

This role involves working outdoors in varying conditions and may require night shifts or weekend work. Travel to different sites may be necessary.
