As a result, alongside several consortium partners, Balfour Beatty has been selected by bp (British Petroleum) to construct a first-of-a-kind fully integrated gas-fired power station with carbon capture and storage, a key driver behind plans to make Teesside the UK’s first decarbonised industrial cluster.
Balfour Beatty is seeking a dynamic Quantity Surveyor to contribute to the Net Zero Teesside (NZT) project based at our site in Redcar and Cleveland.
What you’ll be doing
- Work Location: Project based role complying with the Company’s flexible working policies – 4 days onsite, 1 day remote.
- Experienced QS who has a track record in managing all costs and income within their area of responsibility.
- They seek to minimise the costs of a project and enhance value for money, while still achieving the required standards and quality.
- Preferably, they will be a Chartered Member of the RICS, CICES or CIOB or working to achieve in the near future.
- Experience of managing a small team of commercial staff as well as mentoring others on their journey to becoming professionally qualified is desirable.
- They will maintain their Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

- Financial: Manages all costs and income within their area of responsibility.
- Organisational: Direct reports could include Apprentice QS, Trainee QS, Graduate or Assistant QSs.
Interfaces
- Internal: Commercial and wider Project Team.
- External: Supply Chain, Customers, Stakeholders, Professional and Industry Bodies.
Accountabilities
- Governance: Has a good knowledge of and adheres to the Company’s governance requirements and maximises LEAN/digital opportunities.
- Commercial Management and Administration: Requests information and systematically checks data, prepares Activity Schedules, Resource Schedules & analyses tender documents, critically appraises, estimates and negotiates the above with 3rd parties, reviews complex contract programmes such as Time-Location, assists with the preparation of delay and disruption programmes, monitors subcontract activities, measures and responds appropriately, prepares Internal reports, commercial progress and financial reconciliation and reports to senior project staff.
- Customer/Change Management: Understanding of the Customer Contract and undertakes customer and stakeholder management, analyses rates & prices, agreement of variations and or compensation events as required, prepares, submits and negotiates claims when required, manages commercial aspects with Customer and Stakeholders for their area of responsibility.
- Procurement: Undertakes constructability analyses using construction programmes, prepares procurement programme and helps develop the strategy.
- Development, Recruitment and Retention: Supports the recruitment, supervision and development of team members.

Essentials - The following qualifications or their equivalent are essential:
- BSc or MSc in Quantity Surveying or equivalent.
- Membership of RICS, ICES or CIOB (or working towards).
- CSCS Card (Professional Qualified Person).
