Join us at Balfour Beatty as an EC&I Construction Manager, leading the delivery of a Net Zero Teesside (NZT) project in Redcar and Cleveland. Balfour Beatty is renowned for iconic infrastructure worldwide, and this project represents a key step toward decarbonising Teesside by building a fully integrated gas‑fired power station with carbon capture and storage.
About the Role
As the Area Construction Lead you will manage all on‑site construction activities in a designated zone of the NZT project, focusing on MEP systems. Your responsibilities include ensuring safety, quality, and compliance, coordinating with multiple contractors and stakeholders, and driving the project forward to meet deadlines.
- Lead day‑to‑day MEP construction delivery in a defined zone or package (e.g., plant room, energy centre, data hall, services risers).
- Oversee site operations, logistics and sequencing to ensure efficient, safe, and high‑quality execution.
- Ensure works are delivered in accordance with construction plans, RAMS, and permits.
- Maintain a visible leadership presence to drive a safety‑first culture (Zero Harm).
- Ensure compliance with CDM Regulations, site safety protocols, and environmental controls.
- Lead toolbox talks, safety briefings and site inspections/audits.
- Ensure all MEP works meet project specifications, quality standards and hold points.
- Support QA/QC processes, including inspections, test and commissioning plans and documentation.
- Raise and close NCRs and snagging issues promptly.
- Monitor progress against short‑term and medium‑term look‑aheads, working with planners and supervisors.
- Chair and contribute to daily coordination meetings with subcontractors and engineering leads.
- Manage technical and programme interfaces with civils, structures, architectural and ICT teams.
- Act as the principal point of contact for area subcontractors and suppliers.
- Support logistics coordination, material deliveries and plant allocation.
- Drive subcontractor performance and escalates issues where necessary.
- Liaise with engineering, commissioning, H&S, quality and client teams to align on priorities and access requirements.
- Manage area‑specific constraints and interdependencies with adjacent works.
Who We\’re Looking For
Essential Qualities / Experience
- Significant experience delivering MEP construction within highly regulated environments (e.g., nuclear, healthcare, pharma, data centres, rail).
- Strong working knowledge of mechanical and/or electrical services installation, testing and commissioning.
- Experience managing subcontractor teams, trades and specialist suppliers on large‑scale infrastructure projects.
- Demonstrated understanding of Permit‑to‑Work systems and construction H&S best practices.
- CSCS (Black or White Card), SMSTS (or equivalent), and relevant trade or engineering qualifications.
Background
- NVQ Level 6+ in Construction Management or a degree in Building Services / Engineering / Construction.
