IT Project Manager, UK based with travel between our sites when needed

If you have ever looked at a project plan, system rollout or stakeholder meeting and thought, “There must be a better way to make this land,” this could be the role for you.

We are looking for an IT Project Manager who can bring structure, pace and clarity to technology projects that make a real difference across our business.

This is not a box-ticking role; it is for someone who keeps people engaged, informed and moving in the same direction.

Who are we?

Balaena is an agile maritime group with over 2,000 employees across Gibraltar, Padstow, Tyne, Birkenhead and Falmouth.

We combine industrial agility, innovation and community partnership to support naval and merchant ship sectors.

Change is already happening here. We need someone who can help turn IT projects into measurable business value in a practical, sleeves-rolled-up environment.

In June, the integration of our modern facilities in Gibraltar and Padstow with APCL's infrastructure on Tyne, Birkenhead and Falmouth created one of the world's most capable ship repair and shipbuilding groups - with a network of 12 dry docks and strategic reach across the UK and the Mediterranean.

The personality matters

The right person will have grit, judgement and the confidence to bring order to competing priorities, challenge unclear requirements and keep projects moving — without losing people along the way.

We're looking for someone who brings enthusiasm and a real sense of fun to their working day, someone who enjoys what they do and through building relationships with others creates an atmosphere where the rest of the team enjoy playing their part too.

  • What you will be doing
  • Leading IT projects from initiation to delivery, handover and closure.
  • Defining scope, success measures, plans, budgets and resources.
  • Working with IT colleagues, business stakeholders, suppliers and project teams to keep delivery joined up.
  • Managing risks, issues, dependencies and change control.
  • Providing clear reporting for sponsors and senior leaders.
  • What we are looking for
  • Experience delivering IT projects in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment.
  • Strong project management discipline that you may have built through qualification and / or experience.
  • The ability to bring structure to incomplete information and keep progress moving.
  • Clear communication with the ability and credibility to influence across IT, operations and leadership.
  • A resilient, organised and collaborative style, with confidence to challenge constructively.
  • Someone who can work on multiple projects, tracking progress and sharing clear updates both face to face and electronically

Why join us?

You will work with the Group IT Director, IT teams, business leaders, suppliers and project sponsors on technology work with real visibility and impact.

We bring strong judgement, purpose, organisation and drive and have some fun on the way!

How to prepare for a job interview at Balaena

Brush Up on Your Technical Skills

For an IT consulting role, be ready to demonstrate your technical prowess. You might face questions on systems integration, cloud technologies, or even troubleshooting specific software. If you have experience with tools like AWS, Azure, or even specific programming languages, make sure you can talk about them fluently.

Showcase Your Problem-Solving Approach

IT consulting is all about solving problems for clients. Think about how you can illustrate your approach to a past challenge using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). It's a great way to show how you tackle complex issues and come up with effective solutions.

Know the Business Impact of IT Solutions

When discussing your experiences, focus not just on the tech solutions you implemented, but also on their business impact. Employers want to see that you can connect IT with organisational goals. Prep examples that highlight how your tech contributions improved efficiency or reduced costs for past clients or projects.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

Since IT consulting often involves teamwork and client interactions, expect behavioural questions that assess your interpersonal skills. Be prepared with examples that demonstrate your adaptability, communication skills, and how you handle client feedback. Before the interview, think of situations where you worked closely with clients to create effective IT strategies or changes.
