Are you an organised, hands-on finance professional looking for a varied role in a growing business? This role will be great for you if you're an Accountant who can do the company accounts and payroll as well as general management of our office, on site in Delabole.

If you like to own your role and are at your best working closely with senior leadership and external advisors, you'll enjoy working within our small, close-knit Head Office team as we grow.

Who are we? With a combined workforce of over 2,000 employees and operations spanning Gibraltar, Padstow, Tyne, Birkenhead, and Falmouth, Balaena is one of the UK's most dynamic and regionally anchored maritime groups - combining industrial agility, innovation, and community partnership to support national resilience, commercial competitiveness, and sustainability across both naval and merchant ship sectors.

The integration of Balaena's modern facilities in Gibraltar and Padstow with APCL's infrastructure on Tyne, Birkenhead and Falmouth create one of the world's most capable ship repair and shipbuilding groups - with a network of 12 dry docks and strategic reach across the UK and the Mediterranean.

We respond quickly to defence and commercial requirements and deliver consistent quality and reliability to clients worldwide.

So what will you do? You will do a broad mix of accounting, payroll and office management from maintaining accurate financial records and supporting management accounts to overseeing office supplies, correspondence and facilities. It will be a varied role and the chance for you to make a visible impact as you'll be hands on with ledger work, payments, expenses, bank recs, journals, accruals, prepayments, cards and general reporting to support cashflow etc. Also, you'll be working closely with senior leadership, external accountants, auditors and the wider administration team on the preparation for statutory and reporting of statutory accounts. You'll do payroll for head office employees and look after head office bill payments.

So what are we looking for? Experience with the day-to-day processing of accounts. If you've used Sage or Business Central that would be great! AAT or a qualified accountant ACCA, CIMA, ACA or equivalent. Someone who pays exceptional attention to detail but also can see the bigger financial picture. You'll need experience with statutory account preparation and working with auditors. We're looking for someone who can work both within our team and when needed independently while managing multiple priorities. Most importantly you'll bring a proactive, professional and discreet approach while you handle sensitive information with care. Trustworthiness and integrity are a must in this critical role.

Why join us? Personal Growth - This is an opportunity to make a significant impact while working with and learning from a team of experts. The chance to be part of a team making a real impact on the future of Balaena. Financial Security - with important benefits like your Pension. Work-life Balance - We offer 25 days of annual leave per year plus Bank Holidays. Maternity, Paternity and Parental leave support you during those significant life changes, helping you to balance your family responsibilities with work.

We are big enough to cope, small enough to care, whilst we have significant capacity to take on large and complex projects across our five shipyards, we are a family-owned business with a genuine passion for the maritime industry and the people who make us who we are.

Due to the nature of what we do for some of the customers that we work with, some roles are subject to security control restrictions. These restrictions mean that factors including your nationality, any previous nationalities you have held, and your place of birth may limit those roles you can perform with us. You must also undergo a Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) check before your employment starts, which will include a basic DBS check.
