Join a Team That Shapes the Ground Beneath Us. At BakerHicks, our Ground Engineering specialists play a vital role in delivering some of the UK's most complex and high-impact infrastructure projects. As our portfolio continues to grow, we're looking for a talented Geotechnical Engineer to join our dynamic team in Manchester.
You will work across a diverse range of sectors including Rail, Highways, Power, Defence, Aviation, Life Sciences, and Water, contributing to the technical delivery of innovative, integrated ground engineering solutions. You will also support junior engineers and collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams.
Your Role Will Include:
- Developing geotechnical design and specification packages from concept to completion
- Ground modelling and deriving characteristic geotechnical parameters
- Preparing desk studies, ground investigation specifications, and interpretive reports
- Designing shallow and deep foundations, retaining structures, soil nails, and earthworks
- Tackling complex ground conditions such as soft soils, slope instability, mine workings, and marginal materials
- Supervising ground investigations and providing site support when required
- Collaborating with internal design teams and external stakeholders
- Representing BakerHicks in client meetings and technical discussions
- Ensuring compliance with current codes and standards including EC7, BS, CDM, and H&S regulations
What We're Looking For:
- A degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or Engineering Geology (or equivalent)
- Progress toward chartership (ICE, GeolSoc, IMMM); MSc or PhD is a plus
- A full UK driving licence
- Experience in a design consultancy environment
- Proven geotechnical design experience (foundations, retaining walls, earthworks, slope stability, etc.)
- Solid understanding of UK ground conditions and investigation practices
- Proficiency in geotechnical design software (GEO5 experience desirable)
- Strong technical writing and communication skills
- A collaborative, solution-oriented mindset
- PTS certification is desirable but not essential
- Willingness to travel occasionally for short-term site work across the UK
