Baker Hicks have grown rapidly in the Transmission & Distribution sector over the last ten years and has been successful in winning a number of major projects within the UK. As the demand to deliver exceptional engineering design from our clients continues to grow, an opportunity has arisen for a Senior Electrical (P&C) Engineer. The Senior P&C Engineer role will be reporting to the Discipline Lead - HV and will be responsible for ensuring the quality and consistency of the team's output in the production and control of drawings and technical documents. You will also work with the Power Sector Director to assist during the bid process in order to secure further work.

Key Deliverables:

  • Technical Leadership: Lead the design and review of substation protection and control (P&C) schemes for HV and EHV substations (typically 132kV to 400kV) as per National Grid, SSEN and SPT technical specifications. Provide technical direction and mentorship to junior engineers and design staff. Ensure designs meet applicable standards and client specifications.
  • Protection Systems Design: Develop protection schemes including differential, distance, overcurrent, and busbar protections. Prepare and review protection coordination studies and relay settings.
  • Control & SCADA Systems Design: Design substation control systems including SCADA, RTUs, and automation (IEC 61850 or DNP3 protocols). Develop control logic and interlocking schemes.
  • Drawing and Documentation: Produce and review design drawings: Key Line Diagrams (KLDs), protection schematics, wiring diagrams, and layout drawings. Prepare technical documents: design reports, specifications, and commissioning procedures.
  • Project Delivery: Coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams including civil, structural and Substations Primary. Participate in design reviews, Hazard sessions, and Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT). Support construction, installation, and commissioning phases as needed.
  • Stakeholder Interaction: Interface with utilities, contractors, equipment vendors, and project management teams. Lead meetings with clients to present designs and provide technical justification.
  • Compliance & Quality Assurance: Ensure all design work adheres to health & safety regulations and industry best practices. Participate in internal and external audits and reviews.

About You

  • Minimum BEng / Bsc in Electrical Engineering, with Power / HV background.
  • Ideally MEng / Msc in Electrical Engineering, with Power / HV background.
  • Working toward CEng status is seen as beneficial, however not essential.
  • Ideally working toward CDAE accreditation by National Grid, however not essential.
  • Experience in software packages such as MathCAD, ETAP etc.
  • Experience in IED Software such as Siemens Digsi, S1 Agile, Enervista GE etc.
  • Experience in guiding CAD technicians working in packages such as AutoCAD.
  • Be proficient with associated technical specifications from clients such as National Grid, SSEN, Scottish Power, UKPN, NGED, SPENW, etc.
