BakerHicks is supporting the transformation of the UK’s electricity network, delivering infrastructure that is critical to energy security, resilience, and the transition to net zero. As renewable generation expands and transmission reinforcement programmes accelerate, demand for overhead line engineering capability continues to grow. We are seeking a Mechanical or Electrical Engineer – HV Overhead Line (OHL) Design to support the design and delivery of new and refurbished overhead transmission line projects across the UK. This role offers an excellent opportunity for engineers from mechanical or electrical backgrounds to transition into a highly specialised, high‑demand discipline within the power transmission sector.
You will join a collaborative, multidisciplinary team and contribute across the full project lifecycle, from early concept through to detailed design. Comprehensive training, mentoring from experienced overhead line specialists, and clearly defined development pathways will support your continued professional and technical growth at BakerHicks.
About You
You are a technically capable engineer with a background in mechanical or electrical engineering and a clear interest in developing a career within the energy and utilities sector. You bring strong analytical capability, sound engineering judgement, and a delivery‑focused mindset, with the ability to work effectively across multiple projects and disciplines within a regulated environment. You will be degree qualified (or equivalent) in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering and motivated to pursue professional development, including working toward chartership. You are curious, adaptable, and keen to apply your existing engineering knowledge to large‑scale structural and electrical systems within high‑voltage infrastructure.
Key Purpose
- Support the design of new build and refurbished overhead transmission lines between 11kV and 400kV.
- Apply mechanical or electrical engineering principles to the design of overhead line systems, components, and structures.
- Support conductor system design, including tensions, clearances, thermal ratings, and load cases.
- Contribute to mechanical and structural assessments of towers, poles, foundations, and fittings.
- Assist in producing engineering calculations, technical reports, specifications, and drawings.
- Support concept, FEED, and detailed design stages across multiple projects.
- Ensure designs comply with UK Transmission Owner standards and relevant engineering regulations.
- Collaborate closely with civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical disciplines to deliver integrated design solutions.
- Contribute to technical problem solving, continuous improvement, and innovation within the Transmission & Distribution team.
Experience & Skills Required
- Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
- Experience in mechanical or electrical engineering environments such as M&E, aviation, automotive, rail, power systems, manufacturing, rotating equipment, structural mechanics, or similar sectors.
- Strong analytical skills, with an interest in large‑scale structural, mechanical, or electrical systems.
- Ability to manage tasks across multiple projects while meeting programme, quality, and budget requirements.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, including report writing.
- A proactive approach to learning and developing specialist technical expertise.
- Interest in building a long‑term career within the energy, utilities, or power transmission sector.
- Experience using CAD platforms such as AutoCAD or MicroStation.
- Knowledge of mechanical loading, materials behaviour, FEA concepts, or electrical system design.
- Exposure to infrastructure, utilities, grid, or high‑voltage engineering environments.
- Experience working within regulated or safety‑critical industries.
