Baker Recruitment Group are pleased to be working alongside our client based in BL5. Due to continued growth, they are seeking a hands-on fleet operations professional with strong leadership capability and experience managing large commercial van fleets.
Location: Based in Bolton, will be expected to travel between depots across the North West when required.
Working Days: Monday-Friday (Weekends, during peak operational periods)
Working Hours: 9:30 am – 5:30 pm
Weekly Hours: 37.5 hours per week (30-minute unpaid break)
Holiday Entitlement: 28 days, including bank holidays
Overtime: Available during peak operational periods
Role Overview
The Fleet Manager will oversee the daily operations, maintenance, compliance, and optimisation of the company's vehicle fleet. The successful candidate will ensure that fleet operations run efficiently, safely, and cost-effectively while supporting wider logistics and operational objectives. The role requires strong leadership, operational oversight, and analytical capability to ensure the fleet operates at maximum productivity with minimal downtime.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the end-to-end logistics operations of the company fleet, including vehicle scheduling, tracking, maintenance, and administration.
- Develop and implement fleet management strategies to maximise operational efficiency and return on investment.
- Oversee vehicle servicing, preventative maintenance schedules, and repairs to minimise downtime.
- Monitor fleet performance using key performance indicators (KPIs) such as vehicle utilisation, fuel efficiency, maintenance costs, and service reliability.
- Ensure full compliance with national and regional transport regulations, road safety requirements, and company policies.
- Manage GPS tracking systems and computerised fleet management software to monitor vehicles and driver performance.
- Conduct regular inspections and audits of fleet vehicles to ensure operational and safety standards are maintained.
- Maintain accurate documentation and records for fleet operations, compliance, maintenance, and inspections.
- Manage and supervise fleet staff, including drivers and fleet coordinators, as well as support operational teams where applicable.
- Coordinate with external service providers, repair vendors, and suppliers.
- Manage accident reporting procedures and work with insurers when required.
- Identify opportunities to reduce operational costs such as fuel consumption, vehicle downtime, and maintenance expenditure.
- Support initiatives to improve environmental sustainability within fleet operations where possible.
Technology & Systems
- Utilise fleet management software, telematics systems, and GPS tracking tools.
- Analyse fleet data including vehicle utilisation, route optimisation, fuel consumption, and maintenance performance.
- Work with digital logistics platforms or transport management systems where applicable.
Required Skills & Experience
- Proven experience working as a Fleet Manager or Senior Fleet Supervisor, ideally managing large commercial vehicle fleets.
- Experience managing 300+ vehicles or similar scale fleet operations preferred.
- Valid and clean UK driving licence.
- Strong knowledge of transportation, logistics, and fleet management best practices.
- Experience using fleet management systems, telematics platforms, and vehicle tracking software.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Excellent organisational and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree or diploma in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Transport Management, or similar discipline.
- Experience in budgeting, cost control, and operational efficiency improvements.
- Knowledge of fleet servicing, scheduling, vehicle utilisation analysis, and operations planning.
- Experience within rental, logistics, delivery, or transport sectors.
- Strong stakeholder and customer service management skills.
