The Baker Hughes Internship is designed to enable students either pursuing a Bachelors' or Masters' degree or recently graduated to gain hands-on work experience as the foundation of their professional lives. Our internships will give you first-hand insights into the processes, systems, and practices that are aligned to ensure customer needs are met through flawless execution and the application of leading-edge technology.

Baker Hughes creates highly engineered, technologically advanced products. As such we employ a strong team of engineering professionals across a range of engineering disciplines. We continuously strive to improve our product offering and drive innovation; our engineers develop solutions using bespoke tools and methodologies. A significant part of our suite of engineering software and tools are in-house developed and supported. The Analysis and Software Internship places an engineer in the teams which create and support our software tools and analyses our products. The placement offers opportunity to be part of a small creative software team, developing solutions and working closely with other engineers to explore automation and efficiency opportunities.
Role Overview: Baker Hughes design engineering team in Newcastle (UK) offer two design internships: one with the tendering design team and one with our wider engineering team as software and tools development engineer. The role of intern within the team will see the person exposed to all aspects of the team's duties. Mentor(s) will be assigned throughout the placement, and the full team will support. We promote a feeling of inclusiveness within what is a close and friendly team. The role provides a chance to apply engineering technique with a real commercial focus, and opportunity to engage with many people within Baker Hughes and customers around the globe.
- Tendering Design Engineer Intern: The tendering department in Baker Hughes Flexible Pipe Systems prepare bids for prospective customers. The group includes separate commercial and technical teams that work closely together. The technical team is made up of Pipe Systems Design Engineers who are responsible for customer engagement, understanding technical requirements, preparation of technical designs, detailed engineering analysis, commercial assessment, department improvement activities and preparation of technical documentation. The role requires collaboration with most areas of the business, and frequent interaction and discussion with our customers. Our process begins with gaining an understanding of customer requirements and assessing any risks, then a strategic discussion on our best route to winning the order, then system design and analysis including possible alternatives, then business presentation and sign off for the proposal. The main output of the role is the design of the pipe system and presentation of this within technical documentation. Customer deadlines are often tight and so evaluating risk and getting to best solution fast is important for us.
- Engineering Software and Methods Intern: The engineering team in Baker Hughes use many tools to design the best solutions for our customers. We utilize both off-the-shelf and bespoke designed software, databases and analytical tools. The engineering software intern shall be based with the engineering team, working closely with a small team of software engineers to explore and implement improvement opportunities. The role will afford exposure to many engineering disciplines and processes within the project engineering business to work with engineers on improvements to existing tools and development of new ones. A focus on managing data within an engineering business is also part of the role; the intern will have opportunity to explore benefits to harness existing data sources using tools such as Power BI to deliver engineering data analytics. The software engineering intern role would suit someone who is a self-starter, who is driven to find and propose solutions to problems, and who enjoys the opportunity to own small improvement projects. The role offers freedom to explore ideas within improvement activities and get an understanding of how engineering software improvements and projects are implemented.
Key Responsibilities:
- Tendering Design Intern Role responsibilities include: Providing detailed technical and commercial evaluations as part of the bid process; Preparing pipe designs, associated analysis and technical for submission for Client evaluation; Reviewing technical specifications to determine bid parameters and deliverables; Preparing technical exceptions reports to the reviewed specifications as applicable; Assisting in the design/project execution engineering interface; Providing technical support to internal execution engineering and external customers; Ensuring that key issues, drivers and any other pertinent information from the tender phase are communicated effectively to the project team; Liaising with internal stakeholders; Engineering process improvements and development of software and tools.
- Engineering Software and Methods Intern Role responsibilities include: Work with Engineering teams to establish opportunities for improvement, including solution research and concept demonstration; Explore and present opportunity for improvements to software, databases, spreadsheets and tools; Execute and be part of software development projects, including feedback; Assist in identification and mapping of data landscape. Produce data analytics dashboards to show trends and draw conclusions; Ensuring that key issues, drivers and any other pertinent information from the demand or problem statement communicated effectively to the team; Liaising with internal stakeholders; Engineering process improvements in development of software and tools.
Fuel your passion: To be successful in this role you will: Be currently enrolled or recently graduated in a Bachelors' or Masters' level degree in Engineering, Technology, Mechanics, other STEM-related or business-related program. Have maintained a GPA grade greater than or equal to 3.0 out of 4.0 or the equivalent in your country. Be fluent in oral and written English and have effective communication skills. Be able to legally work in the country that you are applying in, without company sponsorship or time restriction.
