Baker Hughes is seeking two 'Field Specialist' apprentices - In-line inspection (ILI) as part of PPS to support our operations. The position is split between the UK workshop and in-field activities.
This role is a vital part of the PPS ILI team, responsible for preparation, mobilisation, and in-field deployment activities for a key technology, once certified. It includes maintaining equipment to recognised standards, delivering and running tools in the field, and providing timely reports to our global customers to ensure the safe operation of oil and gas pipelines.
The ideal candidate is self-driven, detail-oriented, a problem solver, and capable of working to deadlines. They should be process-oriented, committed to quality, and adhere to PPS ILI work instructions and industry standards.
- Achieve additional technology industry certifications such as βASNT ILI PQ2017β.
- Execute projects flawlessly and deliver on time.
- Prepare and maintain tools for in-field deployment.
- Troubleshoot electro-mechanical inspection equipment.
- Reduce in-line inspection tool maintenance costs.
- Identify quality or productivity issues and propose solutions.
- Interact with customers in the field.
- Report progress to management.
- Comply with EHS policies and promote safety awareness.
- Prepare ILI tools and support equipment to deadlines.
- Support quality and productivity improvement initiatives.
- Work task-oriented within strict deadlines and budgets.

About the Apprenticeship: This is an excellent opportunity to complete an apprenticeship, gaining a formal qualification while earning. As an Operations Apprentice, you will undergo training, testing, and supervision to achieve the Pearson Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge) 601/9054/1 qualification over 3 years. Upon successful completion, there is an option to pursue a one-year higher extension course for further development.
Delivery Method: Based on-site four days a week, with one day at Tyne North training, Embleton Avenue, Wallsend, Tyne and Wear, NE28 9NJ, typically Wednesdays.
Course Length: 3 years, with an additional 4 months for End Point Assessment (EPA).
Industry Internal Training: Post-initial apprenticeship, candidates can qualify for Level 1 Field Specialist certification per the ASNT standard ANSI/ASNT ILI-PQ-2023.
To succeed, it would be advantageous to have:
- GCSEs or equivalent in 5 subjects including Maths, English, and Science (Grade C/4 or Pass).
- Enthusiasm, self-motivation, and attention to detail.
- Good teamwork and communication skills.
- Proficiency in IT.
- Thoroughness and ability to work independently.
- Proactive problem-solving skills.

Practical training includes 14 weeks of hands-on experience in:
- Hand Fitting
- Manual Turning
- Electrical Equipment/System Maintenance
- General Maintenance
Selection Process: Application review and initial screening call. Onsite interview at Baker Hughes in Cramlington. Second stage interview and team meet-and-greet. Offer and start in September 2025, aligned with the academic year.
Working Week: Full-time, 37 hours per week. Four days onsite, one day at training. Attendance during college breaks when college is closed. Flexible start times (07:00-08:30), with possible compressed hours.
