Principal / Associate HVDC Cable Design Engineer

Baker Hicks have grown rapidly in the Transmission & Distribution sector over the last ten years and have been successful in winning a number of major projects within the UK. As the demand to deliver exceptional engineering design from our clients continues to grow, an opportunity has arisen for a Principal HVDC Cable Engineer to join the team.
The HVDC Cable Engineer will be reporting to the Director - HV and will be responsible for delivery of HVDC projects, pursuit of HVDC tenders, developing Baker Hicks’ HVDC capabilities, ensuring the quality and consistency of the team’s output in the production and control of drawings and technical documents and business development.
About You
The candidate must have experience in the production of designs, calculations, reports & drawings associated with HVDC schemes. This will cover overseeing the production of HVDC cable designs, converter station layouts, HVDC cables and equipment specifications, equipment rating calculations, HVDC converter station and cable routing siting studies, HVDC protection requirements, insulation coordination and system modelling.
The candidate must have a reasonable level of maths and science, preferably from a power engineering background and have good communication skills. In the role they will manage the production through a robust checking process but must also undertake design management and coordination, mentor and guide young Engineers and CAD technicians and, when work dictates, support the actual delivery of the outputs.
The candidate must be enthusiastic, mature enough to operate in a diverse team and work without supervision. This role can lead to many of the career paths for the employee as they develop through Baker Hicks.
What You Will Do:
- Delivering HVDC design requirements, including but not limited to:
- HVDC Cable system modelling and rating calculations
- Cable routing studies, including HDDs, landfalls, transition joint bays
- Primary layouts for converter stations
- Cable and Converter station siting studies
- Writing technical specifications for procurement
- Support with FAT activities and assessing testing requirements
- Preparation, checking and approval of feasibility studies, outline and detailed design technical reports and other written documents.
- Design, checking and approval of detail construction drawings.
- Production and approval of design concepts, drawings, specifications and other technical documents.
- Highlighting any quality and delivery risks.
- Provide a technical interface with 3rd parties
- Understanding of IEC standards
- Be proficient with associated technical specifications from clients such as National Grid, SSEN and Scottish Power
- Good computer and report writing skills
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work well within a team
- Good attitude to obtaining new skills and capable at transferring existing skills to overcome new challenges
- Must be competent at creating and laying out quality drawings that contractors, suppliers and manufacturers can understand

What You Will Bring:
- Minimum BEng/Bsc in Electrical or Power Engineering, ideally MEng/MSc in Electrical / Power Engineering.
- Be or working toward CEng status, however not essential.
- This role would suit an individual from an OEM background or with previous HVDC consultancy experience

The successful candidate must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate level of security clearance or assurance level for this role, in line with client and sector requirements.
