This is an exciting opportunity to join a brilliant team to support the continued growth of an established family-owned business in Leeds. We are seeking an experienced Site Test Engineer to join our great Operations team. This role is primarily site-focused, requiring regular travel across the UK and, where required, overseas.
The Role: Reporting to the Head of Site Services, you will be responsible for the on-site testing, commissioning and maintenance of transformers and associated equipment. This is a hands-on role combining mechanical, electrical, and testing responsibilities, requiring a high level of technical competence, safety awareness, and the ability to work independently on customer sites.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and carry out on-site transformer testing and commissioning activities
- Perform mechanical assembly and installation of transformers and associated equipment in line with Transformer testing procedures
- Carry out fault finding, diagnostics, and repair work
- Undertake transformer maintenance activities
- Read and interpret technical drawings and schematics
- Complete all test documentation and reports accurately
- Ensure all work is carried out in line with site RAMS and Health & Safety requirements
- Represent the business professionally when working with customers and stakeholders
- Travel regularly to sites across the UK and overseas as required

- Cooling system checks including fans
- Rupture Detector Relay testing
- Impact Recorder results review
- Oil sampling including pre- and post-circulation analysis
- Distribution Transformers
- Insulation Resistance testing
- Applied Voltage / HV Withstand testing
- Winding Resistance testing
- Transformer Ratio testing
- Vector Group verification
- HV and LV CT testing
- Marshalling and control wiring checks
- Functional testing of auxiliary equipment including: Breathers, OTI and WTI, Magnetic Oil Gauge, Buchholz relay, Pressure Relief Device, Pressure and vacuum gauges
Additional Site Responsibilities:
- Mechanical Assembly
- Installation of radiators, conservators, and cooling systems
- Mounting HV and LV bushings and tap changers
- Gasketing and sealing to prevent oil leaks
- Installation of marshalling boxes, cable tray, and accessories
- Torque checking of fixings
- Electrical Assembly
- Termination of internal and external wiring
- Installation and wiring of control and protection devices
- Performing functional checks on alarms and trips
- Maintenance and Refurbishment
- Oil draining, filling, and filtration support
- Replacement of gaskets, seals, and breathers
- Inspection and upgrading of transformer accessories
- Oil sampling for analysis
- Site Safety and Compliance
- Setting up safe working areas and barriers
- Following RAMS and site safety rules
- Use of lifting and rigging equipment
- Reporting hazards, near misses, and incidents
Knowledge and Experience:
- Proven experience in electrical testing within an engineering environment
- Demonstrable experience in transformer testing and commissioning (essential)
- Experience working in site-based roles and live environments
- Relevant electrical qualifications and strong knowledge of regulations
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and schematics
- Strong understanding of Health and Safety and safe systems of work
- Methodical approach with strong attention to detail
- Good communication skills and ability to work independently on site
- Flexible and willing to travel as required
