Avalon are looking for a proactive and empathetic interim Housing Assistant to join our client in Leicester, focusing on rent collection, income management, and the support of residents within our supported housing schemes. This three month role is vital in helping residents maintain their independence while ensuring the financial sustainability of our social housing stock. You will be the first point of contact for many vulnerable residents, offering practical advice on budgeting and housing benefits to help them sustain their tenancies.

Key duties of the Housing Assistant:

  • Support the Income Team in managing rent accounts, processing payments, and monitoring arrears.
  • Assist residents with housing benefit applications, Universal Credit claims, and wider welfare support to maximize their income.
  • Conduct regular welfare checks and health and safety inspections within supported housing schemes to ensure resident wellbeing.
  • Act as a first point of contact for housing enquiries, providing knowledgeable advice on tenancy rights and responsibilities.
  • Work closely with Supported Housing Officers to identify vulnerable residents who need additional support or signposting to external agencies.
  • Assist with the 'move-in' and 'move-out' process, including property viewings, sign-ups, and void inspections.
  • Maintain accurate administrative records and update housing management systems to track income and resident support needs.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience in a similar Housing Assistant or Income Assistant role within social housing.
  • A basic understanding of the welfare benefits system (Universal Credit, Housing Benefit) and the challenges facing social housing residents.
  • Strong numeracy and administrative skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate sensitively and assertively with diverse groups of people.
  • A proactive approach to resolving resident issues and managing conflicting priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • A clear commitment to equality, diversity, and the principles of safeguarding vulnerable adults.
  • A valid driving licence and access to a vehicle is desirable for travel between schemes across Leicester.
