Responsibilities
- Management and control of ammunition stock levels in accordance with local permits/licence.
- Preparation of weapons (UK MoD, NATO, International Customers) and equipment for proofing, including planned preventative maintenance and thorough cleaning.
- Calibration of test equipment, including the gauging of weapons/barrels and the calibration of pressure transducers.
- Involves at times the handling of conditioned ammunition ranging from +80ºC to -60ºC.
- Preparation and mounting/dis-mounting of weapon systems on a nominated range to allow remote proof firing.
- Conduct proofing of ammunition in the confines of an indoor/outdoor range at varying climatic temperatures.
- Reliably and repeatedly recording of proof test results and sentencing against the relevant technical specifications.
- Upholding security standards, supporting regular armoury audits and range inspections.
- Monitoring and highlighting of low stock levels of weapon parts and materials to support proofing tasks.
- Hand loading of ammunition and conducting charge weight assessment/verification on all new propellant lots arriving on site.
- Working under the instruction of a range conducting officer at other external ranges (tracer distance/plate penetration and noise assessments).
As a Proof Controller you will be part of a team of 5 people who safely conduct the proof testing of small arms ammunition, to ensure that all relevant quality standards are met. You will be trained in the use of small arms weapons and bespoke proof test equipment to conduct remote firing of ammunition. The recorded data will need to be accurately captured from firings to allow the correct sentencing against the relevant specification prior to allowing ammunition to be released off site for delivery.
Qualifications
- Experience within a proof range environment including the safe handling, loading/unloading, making ready, firing, stoppage and making safe procedures of firearms.
- Safety conscious attitude, with knowledge and skills to fully integrate safety into the job role.
- Experience of weapon and instrumentation maintenance, set up and gauging.
- Ability to conduct trials against a proof specification in conjunction with support from the engineering function.
- Operate within a multi-functional team whilst maintaining proof range standards and independence from other influencing departments.
- Identify and escalate quality issues and process/product deviations.
- Ability to view and understand collected process data/information.
- Knowledge about types of ammunition and features.
- Basic computer literacy skills in Outlook, Word and Excel would be advantageous.
