Job Description
Site Reliability Engineering is a rapidly growing concept in industry, with a remit to drive the quality, reliability and performance of essential systems. As a Site Reliability Engineer you will be part of a team at the forefront of this, building teams and tools and creating a culture of continual improvement to revolutionise the way our customers’ systems are built and supported.
Key Accountabilities
- Perform work historically done by an operations team but using software and systems engineering expertise to automate and reduce human labour, limiting traditional manual operational work to no more than half of the SRE team’s time.
Core Role Accountabilities
- Support and maintain essential services that support core mission applications, proactively enhancing their availability, performance and stability.
- Find innovative solutions to problems, automating repetitive work; ensure support does not exceed 50% of the time.
- Instrument applications lacking sufficient monitoring, use output to demonstrate daily improvements.
- Understand the relationship between software and infrastructure to achieve scalability, resilience and optimal use of resources.
- Participate in the wider DevOps/SRE community within the organisation.
Competencies
- Technical skills – Java, JavaScript, HTML; data stores such as Elastic and Mongo; Linux and Windows command lines (Bash, PowerShell); cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, OpenStack); deployment tools (Chef, Puppet); monitoring stacks (ELK); containerisation (Docker); automation testing (Selenium); micro-services architectures.
- Experience in Agile Scrum, using tools such as Jira; knowledge of ITIL terminology; ability to diagnose and troubleshoot application issues across different stack levels.
- Experience extending and improving open-source software; familiarity with automation test frameworks and CI/CD pipelines.
- Awareness and insight into technology trends to adopt innovative tools.
