Join BAE Systems as an experienced Database Administrator (DBA) with deep expertise in AWS database services. As a key member of our Platform Engineering team, you’ll design, build, and maintain secure, resilient, and highly available database platforms that underpin mission‑critical systems for our National Security customers. These platforms are the backbone for applications that protect the UK, and you’ll play a vital role in ensuring they are cloud‑optimised, performant, and compliant.
You’ll work in empowered, autonomous teams with regular contact with engineering and end‑users to design, deploy, and support database solutions across AWS and hybrid environments. You’ll be encouraged to identify new ways of solving problems and will have the opportunity to work across a range of customer projects. You’ll have ownership and responsibility for your solutions while being part of a wider engineering community that supports your growth. You’ll help define and implement best practices for AWS‑native database services, ensuring security, scalability, and automation are at the heart of everything we deliver. About You
You will have hands‑on experience in many of the following:
- AWS Database Services: Deep expertise in Amazon RDS (PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle) and Aurora, including provisioning, configuration, patching, scaling, and performance tuning.
- AWS Native Capabilities: Experience with backup and recovery strategies using AWS tools, automated failover, multi‑AZ deployments, read replicas, and monitoring via CloudWatch.
- Security and Compliance: Implementing IAM roles, encryption (KMS), auditing, and patching in AWS environments.
- Automation and Infrastructure as Code: Using Terraform or CloudFormation to provision and manage database resources.
- Performance Optimization: Query tuning, indexing strategies, and troubleshooting in cloud environments.
- Scripting: Strong skills in Python, Bash, or Shell for automation and operational tasks.
- Operating Systems: Working knowledge of Linux and Windows.
- Communication and Problem‑Solving: Ability to collaborate effectively and adapt to new technologies.
- Agile Delivery: Experience working in Agile teams (Scrum, Kanban, SAFe).
It would be great if you also had experience in some of these, but if not we’ll help you with them:
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines for database deployments (Jenkins, Bamboo).
- Familiarity with containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Certifications such as AWS Certified Database – Specialty, AWS Solutions Architect, or Oracle OCP.
Security Clearance is required for this vacancy. If you are not currently security‑cleared, you will need to be eligible for this and willing to go through the process.
