What you will be doing:

As a Principal Safety Engineer, you will provide specialist expertise in explosion safety and process safety engineering, supporting high-hazard operations and ensuring robust compliance with safety standards across the site. You will work closely with engineers, safety specialists, and operational teams to develop, assure, and improve safety-critical processes, risk assessments, and engineering controls.

Core duties:

  • Complete DSEAR risk assessments and compliance activities
  • Develop and review explosion safety strategies and hazardous area classification (HAC) documentation
  • Conduct hazard identification, risk analysis, and safety assessments for high-hazard systems
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers within the safety engineering team
  • Peer review technical safety deliverables and engineering outputs
  • Develop, produce, and maintain process safety policies and site documentation
  • Support continuous improvement of site safety systems and compliance frameworks
  • Engage with stakeholders across engineering, operations, and safety functions

Essential Skills:

  • STEM degree or equivalent experience, with desirable experience in COMAH safety case development, fire safety engineering, or site/infrastructure asset protection
  • Experience working in explosion safety or other high-hazard engineering environments within regulated industries
  • Strong expertise in DSEAR risk assessment production, including hazard identification, analysis, and documentation
  • Deep understanding and practical application of hazardous area classification (HAC) principles
  • Experience applying structured hazard analysis techniques to assess and mitigate complex safety risks
  • Demonstrated ability to implement and improve engineering or business safety processes aligned with strategic objectives
  • Strong analytical capability to assess risk and develop effective, practical mitigation strategies

The Safety and Environmental Team:

This is an exciting opportunity to join an established team working on control of major accident hazards and wider safety strategy. You will be part of a small, highly collaborative group ranging from principal engineers to apprentices, working closely with operational managers, heads of departments, and health & safety specialists. The role also offers exposure to wider organisational safety initiatives, with opportunities for professional development and progression within the function.
