Role description: The Support Engineer provides on-site technical support at HMS Collingwood for all MCTS (Maritime Composite Training System) training systems, covering software, hardware, and network environments. The role also delivers telephone-based support to staff at the MCTS training facility at HMNB Devonport. Responsibilities include ensuring training environments operate smoothly and reliably, rapidly diagnosing and resolving system issues, and providing effective user support to maintain uninterrupted training delivery.

Core Duties:

  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues with the training systems, raising Observation Reports for further investigation on the Broad Oak Reference Rig when no resolution can be found.
  • Following project processes and procedures to monitor and log system issues.
  • Supporting future changes to ensure the MCTS System is fit for purpose and satisfies Service Delivery requirements.
  • Assisting the Broad Oak MCTS Development team where required.
  • Install and configure training software and tools.
  • Support maintainers, role-players and trainers with system usage and technical queries.
  • Maintain documentation of issues, fixes and system changes.

Essential Skills:

  • Experience in Naval warfare systems and IT/system support, including Windows and Linux operating systems and networked environments.
  • Understanding of training platforms, simulation tools, and virtual training environments.
  • Able to investigate system and software issues, liaise effectively with users and development teams, and help deliver timely and practical solutions.
  • Good awareness of end-to-end systems, including software development and integration, hardware platforms, and networking environments.

The Maritime Composite Training Systems Development Team: The MCTS team currently comprises of one on-site support engineer and a group of software engineers based at Broad Oak. On site, the team is made up of maintainers and system role players, all working together to keep training systems operational over multiple classrooms and sites.
