Job Description: The role sits within the Materials Technology Department, working across Welding Engineering, Non‑Metallics, R&D, and Additive Manufacturing. The team primarily supports reactive, urgent issues arising during build activities, providing onsite quality support to team leaders and engaging with wider stakeholders. You will help develop and deliver metallurgical advice across Operations, Engineering, Supply Chain, and the wider BAE Systems business, including design teams. The role also contributes to standards, investigations, weld assessments, supplier reviews, and the evaluation of new materials and manufacturing processes.
Core duties:
- Provide metallurgical support across submarine build and commissioning activities
- Advise engineering teams on materials, manufacturing processes, and corrosion management
- Support welding assessment, supplier capability reviews, and the introduction of new materials and processes
- Contribute to standards, procedures, risk assessments, and metallurgical investigations
Essential Skills:
- Degree (BEng/BSc) in Metallurgy or Materials Science, or an equivalent vocational qualification
- Familiar with both ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgical principles
- Experience in metal forming and processing techniques
The Materials Technology in build support team: You will join a small team of four, providing reactive support to urgent issues arising during the build phase. As an Engineer, you will be part of a team that is working on technology management to develop material solutions for existing engineering problems within submarine projects. We offer relocation support packages across all Submarines roles, subject to meeting eligibility criteria.
