An accredited Elite Training Centre, the NBC is the home of badminton in England, where the best talent is nurtured and elite athletes are developed to compete and represent England and Great Britain on the world stage. We host world-class badminton courts open to clubs, coaches and the wider badminton community, as well as public and professional gym facilities, fitness suites, a spin studio, meeting rooms, a popular three-star 25-room hotel, a sports bar, a small restaurant, and the National Badminton Museum - all open to the public.

Role summary

Duty Manager/Fitness Instructors are responsible for providing a safe and welcoming environment for all visitors to the NBC – from Olympic athletes and Badminton England staff to lodge guests, museum visitors and club members using our fitness facilities. This role requires someone who is willing to work morning and evening shifts during both the week and weekends, be adaptable, customer-focused and able to work both independently and as part of a team, while providing an excellent fitness experience and ensuring the smooth running and safety of the centre. The role also includes ensuring Health and Safety guidelines are followed and compliance records are maintained.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Customer Service and Member Engagement
    • Act as an ambassador for Badminton England and the National Badminton Centre (NBC), promoting our values and delivering a positive brand experience for all visitors.
    • Maintain high visibility in all areas of the centre, particularly within fitness spaces, engaging with customers in a professional and positive manner.
    • Provide excellent customer service to all users, motivating members to reach their fitness goals.
    • Conduct gym consultations, inductions and create tailored fitness plans.
    • Support membership sales by conducting facility tours and understanding customer goals.
  • Operational & Facility Management
    • Oversee day-to-day operations of the NBC, ensuring smooth functioning of both fitness and wider centre facilities.
    • Act as a key holder, responsible for opening and closing the centre on a shift basis.
    • Carry out daily operational and cleaning tasks, including gym and facility checks.
    • Coordinate with maintenance staff to ensure facilities are safe and well maintained.
  • Financial & Administrative Tasks
    • Support daily financial responsibilities such as processing transactions and maintaining accurate records.
    • Assist with membership sales, including onboarding and ensuring customer data is correctly recorded.
    • Identify opportunities for cost efficiencies without compromising quality or member experience.
  • Staff Coordination
    • Coordinate and support team members on shift, ensuring smooth handovers and effective teamwork.
    • Lead by example in delivering high standards of customer service and operational performance.
  • Compliance, Safety & Health Standards
    • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations across all areas of the building and fitness facilities.
    • Complete and record regular health and safety checks, escalating any concerns appropriately.
    • Provide first aid and complete accident/incident reports in line with centre procedures.
  • Communication & Community Engagement
    • Contribute to clear handovers and regular communication with senior management regarding operations and fitness services.
    • Handle customer complaints and operational challenges professionally and proactively.
    • Collaborate with the Fitness & Rackets Manager and wider team to plan events and initiatives that promote community engagement.

In addition to your core role, we offer qualified staff the opportunity to deliver private personal training sessions, up to 10 hours per week. This allows you to further develop your professional profile and enhance your earning potential within a supportive and dynamic environment.

Who are we looking for?

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Level 2 / 3 Fitness Instructor qualification
  • Level 3 Personal Training qualification (Desirable)
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a passion for the Health and Fitness Industry
  • Ability to multitask and prioritise in a fast-paced environment

Additional Requirements:

  • First Aid certification (training provided if needed).
  • Flexibility to work shifts - mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
