We are looking for a bioinformatician to develop and maintain high throughput computational workflows. Company Bactobio is a young London-based BioTech company (2020) using AI, genomics, and synthetic biology to culture previously unculturable microbes and screen them for antimicrobials. We regularly discover chemically novel antimicrobials that are effective against some of the biggest infectious diseases in agritech and healthcare, and select diseases to target based on the lack of current, effective solutions and the potential market size.
Our work culture is built around impact, empowerment, and collaboration, and we have managed to attract incredible scientists from world-leading institutions, alongside operational experts. We believe that open and inclusive conversations lead to better solutions. As a result, we have created a unique work environment, where ambitious people enjoy working together to make the world greener and safer. The company is at an exciting stage, as we are looking forward to our first product commercialisation in H1 2026, after which we intend to undergo a significant Series A raise and use the funds to expand our current team of 50.
Role
Help us discover novel antimicrobials from bacteria by creating bioinformatics pipelines that turn raw microbial sequencing data into trusted, actionable results. You will be responsible for creating robust pipelines, ensuring data is traceable end-to-end across our workflow, and integrating new algorithms into production-ready code.
Team
The bioinformatics team is part of a tight knit computational group of data scientists and software engineers. We share a codebase and work together to build scalable infrastructure. We also work closely with wet lab scientists across our core teams.
Key responsibilities
- Design, troubleshoot and deploy reproducible bioinformatics pipelines.
- Maintain an internal database of sequencing data.
- Integrate new features into our pipelines.
- Ensure scientists can access the data they need via our in-house app.
- Provide bioinformatics expertise to help scientists interpret sequencing data.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
You should have:
- PhD in bioinformatics or equivalent, 3-4 years’ experience.
- Background in microbial genomics.
- Prior experience working with relational databases.
- Experience handling large volumes of high-throughput data using workflow managers (Snakemake preferred).
- Experience maintaining, updating and deploying bioinformatics pipelines.
- Solid engineering habits, including version control, and an eye for detail.
It would be great if you had:
- A solid understanding of Docker.
- Hands-on experience with cloud computing.
- Familiarity with Illumina and Oxford Nanopore Technologies sequencing platforms.
- Experience in antimicrobial discovery.
The chance to be part of a fun, multicultural, kind, and ambitious impact-driven crowd. Daily access to leaders and mentors in the business. Brand new, modern labs in Central London with dedicated office space, large balconies, and 360° views of the London skyline, where we all spend 4 days per week (1 day working from home). 25 days holiday + bank holidays.
