We are looking for an experienced and accredited counselling or psychotherapy professional to join BACP as an Accreditation Assessor. This role sits at the heart of our work to uphold and develop nationally recognised standards for counsellors, psychotherapists, training providers and counselling services. You must be a current BACP member and hold BACP Accredited status, as this role requires assessors to apply BACP’s accreditation criteria and uphold professional standards across individual, course and service schemes.

Working pattern

This is a 0.6 FTE employed post, worked over three office‑hours days per week (0.6 FTE). You may choose any three days between Monday‑Thursday, with Tuesday mandatory. Each day is 7 hours 15 minutes, typically from 8:45 am to 5:00 pm. The role is home‑based but assessors must be fully available during their contracted BACP working days and must not undertake other employment during those hours.

Travel requirements

Although the role is home‑based, regular UK travel is essential. Assessment visits across the UK – both in‑person and virtual – as well as attendance at BACP House (Lutterworth) and member events (e.g., Making Connections across the four nations) are required. All travel costs are reimbursed in line with BACP policy.

Key responsibilities

  • Assess initial and senior individual accreditation applications and resubmissions.
  • Assess counselling and psychotherapy courses and services applying for accreditation or renewal.
  • Conduct course/service visits and provide clear, concise written reports.
  • Liaise with moderators regarding accreditation decisions.
  • Support members through tele‑surgeries and webinars.
  • Contribute to standardisation, development of criteria, and wider accreditation projects.
  • Represent BACP at external or member‑facing events.
  • Uphold BACP values in all communication and decision‑making.

Essential requirements

  • Accredited member of BACP.
  • Qualified counsellor or psychotherapist in current practice.
  • Experience supervising casework and teaching/lecturing counselling or psychotherapy.
  • Experience assessing learners (e.g., marking, moderating, supervised skills assessment).
  • Strong familiarity with a range of counselling and psychotherapy modalities.
  • Strong understanding of FE/HE training standards and assessment processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to produce clear, concise reports.
  • Highly organised, able to manage multiple time‑sensitive tasks independently.
  • Ability to challenge constructively, work collaboratively and contribute to development and change.
  • Experience with RPL/APEL routes is desirable.
