Design Engineer

Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering and design solutions from project concept to practical completion, with the goal of winning projects and increasing site net margin.
  • Deliver competitive, holistic designs rather than focus on individual pile elements.
  • Ensure design efficiency and buildability, taking full accountability for creating practical and buildable solutions through collaboration with operational teams.
  • Provide technical and design support to all BSL departments, fully integrating with estimating and operational teams to enhance performance.
  • Analyse project inputs, interrogate them, reach agreement, and integrate them into a coherent design solution.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes within the department.

Qualifications

  • Master’s level qualification in Civil Engineering.
  • Competent in the design of piles and embedded retaining walls.
  • Experience with micropiles, minipiles, ground anchors, soil nailing, soil mixing and grouting.
  • Geological knowledge of ground conditions throughout the UK.
  • Knowledge of construction processes, methods and site practices.
  • Familiarity with software packages such as WALLAP.
  • Agility and ability to work quickly on multiple workstreams concurrently and under pressure.
  • Willingness to attend the office and work in fast‑paced teams.
  • Ability to recognise one’s own knowledge and skill limitations and the limitations of others.
  • Resilience, assertiveness, humility, optimism and openness to change.
