An Electrical & Instrumentation Technician delivers best-in-class planned, preventative, and corrective maintenance activities across our whisky distillation facilities. Working at the heart of our malt distilleries, they ensure that both electrical systems and instrumentation are performing reliably, safely and compliantly. The successful candidate will support continuous improvement across John Dewar and Sons Ltd (JDSL) / Bacardi to ensure that:

  • Key operational metrics within Spirit Supply are consistently achieved
  • Engineering performance targets are met through effective maintenance practices
  • Distillery assets, equipment, and engineering systems meet Bacardi standards
  • Equipment uptime is maximized, ensuring consistent production and process efficiency
  • World Class Manufacturing principles are embedded and continuously advanced

This role is ideal for a qualified electrician with hands-on experience in process environments and a passion for both electrical systems and instrumentation.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Contribute to the development of a proactive and predictive maintenance strategy for all site assets
  • Execute planned and corrective maintenance tasks, logging all work accurately in the CMMS, including time spent, faults identified, and parts used
  • Maintain and improve the site’s asset inspection and maintenance programme, ensuring compliance with statutory, safety, and best practice requirements
  • Follow quality SOPs to ensure first-time-right equipment reliability and correct engineering standards are met
  • Recommend improvements to Preventive Maintenance plans and advise on spare part requirements to maximise equipment uptime
  • Support plant optimisation initiatives and suggest improvements to enhance efficiency and reliability
  • Liaise with and support external suppliers and contractors as required, including permit-to-work (PTW) arrangements
  • Participate actively in Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement activities to drive maintenance excellence
  • Maintain work areas to 5S standards, ensuring cleanliness, organisation, and safe working conditions
  • Be aware of key team KPIs and contribute to their improvement through individual actions and team collaboration
  • Support asset projects from design through to implementation, testing, and handover, ensuring documentation and registers are updated accordingly
  • Provide first-line breakdown support for assets, particularly at the Aberfeldy site
  • Proactively monitor asset performance, walk the floor, and challenge underperformance, implementing timely and effective solutions
  • Identify and engage in personal training and development activities, including CompEx training and working safely in ATEX-regulated hazardous areas
  • Comply with all Health & Safety regulations, actively identifying and mitigating hazards before they lead to incidents

Skills / Experience

  • Completion of a recognised electrical apprenticeship
  • HNC or HND in Electrical Engineering (or a related discipline)
  • Strong knowledge of electrical standards and compliance with current regulations
  • Experience in a similar role within the spirits industry or a fast-paced FMCG environment preferred
  • Confident in fault-finding on PLCs and I/O systems (Siemens knowledge is a plus but not essential)
  • Experience working with external SCADA integrators for troubleshooting and system upgrades
  • Hands-on experience with process instrumentation and calibration routines
  • Familiarity with distillation and fluid handling systems
  • Experienced with electronic VSDs and servo drive/control systems
  • Competent in diagnosing faults on three-phase motor control circuits
  • Knowledgeable in the use and application of various electrical sensors
  • CompEx Ex01–Ex04 qualified (hazardous area working)
  • BS7671 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations qualified

FUNCTIONAL SKILLS

  • Demonstrable experience working safely in a manufacturing or processing environment
  • Strong electrical and instrumentation diagnostic and fault-finding abilities
  • Skilled in supporting reliable operation of process control systems and instrumentation
  • Comfortable working collaboratively with contractors, vendors, and engineering teams
  • Knowledge of liquid handling/process equipment and associated machinery
  • Familiar with continuous improvement practices and maintenance excellence in a World Class environment
