The Story of Emily in Cornwall – a heritage attraction and cultural destination of national importance – is part of the Babylonstoren and The Newt group. The General Manager will be responsible for overarching leadership, performance, sustainability, and the public image of the business. This is a senior leadership role that includes:

Purpose of the Role

To lead and establish The Story of Emily as a sustainable heritage and hospitality business of high quality, while achieving the cultural mission, financial performance, and long-term growth through strong strategy, disciplined execution, and excellent people leadership.

Requirements and Responsibilities

  • Strategy, Planning & Delivery
    • Lead the creation and delivery of the site’s strategy through the annual business planning and budgeting process.
    • Articulate long-term objectives as clear operational plans, capital programmes, and initiatives for growth.
    • Ensure all departments align with the agreed business plan and performance targets.
  • Financial Leadership & Good Corporate Governance
    • Full ownership of the site’s profit and loss statement, including revenue, cost management, margin, and investment decisions.
    • Ensure decisions are made within the framework of good financial governance, risk management, and accountability.
    • Oversight of pricing, staffing models, and capital investment to maximise long-term sustainability.
  • Operations & Guest Experience
    • Overarching leadership over all operations on the site, including: Visitor experience (Rectory, War Rooms, exhibitions, hosting), Restaurant, retail and functions, Grounds, gardens, and estate appearance, Technical and exhibition systems.
    • Ensure a consistently high standard regarding safety, reliability, storytelling, and hospitality.
  • Property & Landowner Responsibilities
    • Act as landowner for all properties on the site, including staff accommodation and rental properties.
    • Ensure full compliance with laws and regulations regarding: Health & safety, Gas, electricity and fire safety, Rental obligations and tenants, Property maintenance and risk management.
  • People Leadership, Culture & Conflict Resolution
    • Lead and develop the full management and frontline team.
    • Handle dispute resolution, conflict management, and performance management to maintain a healthy, respectful, and productive work culture.
    • Build a leadership team with high mutual trust capable of ensuring smooth daily operations as well as achieving long-term growth.
  • Reporting to Stakeholders and Shareholders
    • Take ownership of the formal reporting process to senior stakeholders and shareholders.
    • Provide clear, accurate, and timely reports on: Financial performance, Operational health, Risks and issues, Strategic progress.
  • External Representation & Profile
    • Represent The Story of Emily at: Local, national, and international conferences, Functions and awards events, Community and heritage forums.
    • Deliver presentations to interest groups, the media, and partners for promotional and educational purposes.
    • Act as the public face of the attraction at: Local government, Community organisations, Tourism bodies, Awards and heritage institutions.
  • Partnerships & Reputation
    • Build and manage relationships with: Local councils and tourism organisations, Community groups, Cultural and heritage bodies, Suppliers, sponsors, and partners.
    • Protect and enhance the reputation, credibility, and national profile of The Story of Emily.
