We are seeking a dedicated Principal Scientist in Biochemistry/Enzymology to join our Research and Innovation department. This permanent, full-time role offers a starting salary from £50,400 to £57,400 per annum, depending on experience, plus benefits including up to 12% pension contribution and income protection.
The successful candidate will report to the Group Leader of Mechanistic Pharmacology and will be based at either the Babraham Research Campus in Cambridge or the Scotland Institute in Glasgow. We consider flexible working arrangements to meet business needs.

About the Role
This role involves designing and developing physiologically relevant biochemical assays to characterize cancer targets, enable high-throughput screening, and profile small molecule interactions. You will drive innovative approaches in cellular pharmacology, participate in conferences, and contribute to publications, supporting our mission to accelerate cancer treatment development.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop biochemical assays for cancer targets.
- Profile structure-activity and structure-kinetic relationships of small molecules.
- Characterize mechanisms of action to inform clinical strategies.
- Stay abreast of cutting-edge cellular pharmacology techniques and approaches.
- Collaborate with industry and academic partners to progress cancer targets.
Required Skills and Experience
- A BSc, MSc, or PhD in biochemistry or in vitro pharmacology, with relevant experience.
- Significant experience in drug discovery, especially enzyme and small molecule inhibitor mechanisms.
- Deep understanding of enzymology, biochemical assays, and detection technologies.
- Experience in assay development across target classes.
- Leadership skills with the ability to provide strategic direction.
- A credible reputation demonstrated through publications, conference presentations, and a strong professional network.
