Overview
As a Principal Safety Engineer at Devonport Royal Dockyard, you will lead safety engineering for major infrastructure projects supporting the Royal Navy’s sustainment programmes. You will influence design intent, validate safety claims, and ensure compliant, safe solutions across docks, berths, and facilities. Your work connects design and construction teams to integrate safety into every stage. Responsibilities
- Review safety designs for compliance with engineering and HSE standards
- Provide SME support to design and construction teams for technical problem-solving
- Guide and review safety design packages ensuring multi-discipline integration
- Verify safety case claims with complete and compliant design documentation
- Offer onsite advice for design changes and defect rectification with QA adherence
- Support DA processes and act as a Design Authority or assist DA activities
Key requirements
- Strong background in safety engineering within complex, high-hazard projects (senior level)
- Experience reviewing or managing safety cases and assessing design intent
- Dockyard, defence, or nuclear industry exposure (or oil & gas, rail, aerospace as alternatives)
- Experience as a Design Authority or involvement in DA processes
- Ability to guide teams toward compliant technical solutions
