In this Senior Mechanical Handling Engineer role, you lead delivery of major infrastructure and engineering programmes at Devonport, working within a multidisciplinary team to oversee mechanical handling, crane systems and dockside projects. You will own key work packages, mentor engineers, and shape innovative solutions for the Royal Navy and national critical infrastructure. The role combines technical leadership with hands-on delivery across concept to handover, with a strong emphasis on safety, quality and governance. Responsibilities
- Lead delivery of mechanical handling, dockside infrastructure and multidisciplinary work packages from concept to handover
- Manage technical requirements and review calculations, drawings, specifications and design documentation for quality delivery
- Design and integrate crane protection systems, mechanical handling equipment, access control solutions and infrastructure improvements
- Coordinate with construction, civil, mechanical, electrical and control systems stakeholders to manage complex interfaces
- Mentor engineers and designers while driving safety, quality, regulatory compliance and continuous improvement
Key requirements
- Experience leading complex engineering projects involving cranes, mechanical handling systems or mechanical and electrical infrastructure
- Experience managing crane safety, lifting equipment, protection systems and mechanical handling solutions in regulated environments
- Experience delivering multidisciplinary design projects and managing interfaces across mechanical, electrical, controls and civil engineering
- Experience in highly regulated sectors such as defence, nuclear, marine, heavy engineering or critical infrastructure
- Experience overseeing design assurance, technical reviews, safety management and engineering governance throughout the project lifecycle
