Our 4-year Project Controls Apprenticeship is a fantastic opportunity to play a part in delivering major engineering programmes that help protect the UK and its allies. Join us and you'll gain the skills and insight to support everything from ship design to construction and refit.
About the programme
Project Controls is all about bringing structure and visibility to complex work. During your apprenticeship, you’ll rotate through several placements across the Project Management and Controls function, building your understanding of how large-scale engineering projects are delivered safely, efficiently and on time. You’ll learn about scheduling, risk management, budgeting and cost control, change management, reporting and stakeholder communication. Each area offers a different perspective on how our teams operate, and together they’ll help you develop the broad skill set needed to support projects of national importance. This is an exciting opportunity to learn from experienced professionals who’ll share their knowledge and support your progress. Teamwork is at the heart of how we work – you’ll collaborate with engineers, planners and project managers, helping to make sure every project milestone is achieved. As your confidence grows, you’ll take on more responsibility, contributing to live projects that make a real difference. Throughout the programme, you’ll be supported by mentors, line managers and our Early Careers team, who’ll help you build technical capability, professional judgement and the confidence to reach your goals.
Your education/training
As part of your apprenticeship, you’ll study with Fife College, working towards a Modern Apprenticeship in Engineering Technical Support (SCQF Level 7). Training combines classroom learning with workplace experience, giving you the knowledge and practical understanding to apply project controls techniques effectively. When you finish your apprenticeship, you’ll be ready to take on a role as a Project Controller, supporting the management of complex programmes across our Marine and Defence business. Upon completion, you can expect to earn a competitive salary exceeding £37,000, with opportunities to continue your professional development through higher-level qualifications in project management or business improvement. Many of our apprentices go on to progress into roles such as Project Planner, Risk Analyst or Project Manager, building long-term careers within Babcock’s global operations. Through the Babcock Role Framework, you’ll have a clear view of how your career can progress, with mapped-out pathways, development opportunities and the tools you need to get wherever you want to go.
What you’ll need
5 National 5 qualifications at grade C or above, including Maths, English and a Science or Technical subject.
