The role:

As an On Track Machine Technician, you’ll ensure the safe, efficient and reliable operation of our On Track Machine (OTM) fleet across Scotland. You’ll carry out maintenance, fault‑finding, repairs and operational duties that directly support high‑quality rail infrastructure delivery. Your work will minimise downtime, enhance safety, and allow essential track renewals and maintenance projects to run smoothly. This is a role where you’ll develop deep technical capability, grow your operational skills, and play a vital part in the success of our Rail business within Babcock’s Land sector.

Day-to-day, you’ll have the following responsibilities:

  • Carry out planned servicing, inspections and routine maintenance on the OTM fleet
  • Diagnose and repair faults to minimise downtime and maintain safe, compliant operation
  • Undertake overhauls, major repairs and component replacements at authorised maintenance locations
  • Operate On Track Machines for which competency certification has been achieved
  • Test and calibrate machine systems to meet internal quality and safety standards.

Please note that the successful candidate will be required to pass a targeted medical questionnaire and/or medical examination as a condition of employment for this role. This is a full‑time, permanent position working 35 hours per week based at Rutherglen, with travel required across sites throughout Scotland. You will also work nights and weekends on a rostered basis.

Essential experience of the On Track Machine Technician:

  • Considerable experience in On Track Machine maintenance
  • Fairly experienced as an OTM Operator
  • Proven ability to fault‑find across all OTM systems
  • Strong understanding of mechanised track maintenance and Permanent Way rules
  • Experience maintaining and repairing On Track Machines.

Qualifications for the On Track Machine Technician:

  • Recognised Apprenticeship or relevant NVQ in maintenance activities.
