The role
As a Commissioning Mechanical Test Engineer, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. You’ll be at the heart of one of the UK’s most critical defence programmes. You’ll ensure submarine systems are tested, calibrated, and commissioned to exacting standards – directly supporting operational readiness and national security.
Day-to-day you’ll be:
- Conducting mechanical testing, calibration, and commissioning tasks on submarine systems
- Supporting the Senior Test Engineer to optimise team performance and resource use
- Applying safety, quality, and environmental policies during all commissioning activities
- Reviewing engineering documentation and contributing to technical problem-solving
- Engaging with contractors and internal teams to manage risks and meet commissioning goals
This role is full time, 36 hours per week Monday to Thursday and is based on site at HMNB Clyde Faslane.

- Proven experience in mechanical commissioning and testing
- Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively in high-stakes environments
- Strong understanding of safety and quality standards
- Experience working with multidisciplinary teams
- Effective communication and stakeholder engagement skills
Qualifications for the Commissioning Mechanical Test Engineer
- Recognised Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship (or equivalent), with demonstrable industry experience.
- HNC in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent), supported by relevant practical experience.

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
