As a Lifting Operative, you support essential operations in our submarine and warship programmes. You work within a skilled team, safely moving equipment and materials to keep major defence projects moving forward.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out slinging and lifting operations safely and efficiently.
  • Support fleeting operations on submarines and warships.
  • Create and follow lift plans and operational instructions.
  • Set up and maintain safe exclusion zones during lifting activities.
  • Inspect lifting equipment, report and isolate non‑compliant items.

Work Pattern and Schedule

This is a full‑time role, 35 hours per week, based at Devonport Royal Dockyard. Optimised Working Patterns (OWP) are available; OWP is a temporary variation to standard terms that commits you to a 7‑day working arrangement. Standard duty pattern consists of 4‑week cycles of day/back or day/night shifts. Example remuneration: Gross salary £31,229; Gross OTE for core dayshift/backshift pattern £44,724.

Qualifications

  • Experience in lifting operations or a similar hands‑on industrial role.
  • Ability to follow procedures and work safely in a structured environment.
  • Strong communication skills, including signalling to crane operators.
  • Willingness to learn, develop, and undertake further training.
  • Experience in marine, construction or heavy engineering environments is desirable.
  • Relevant certification: CPCS Blue A40 Slinger Signaller, NPORS 402 Slinger Signaller, or NVQ Level 2 in Lifting and Moving Loads (or equivalent).
  • Additional rigging or lifting certifications are advantageous but not essential.

Security Clearance

The successful candidate must achieve and maintain a Security Check (SC) clearance. Some roles may be subject to national security clearance and trade control restrictions, which could affect eligibility based on place of birth, nationality, citizenship or residency.
