The role

As a Mechanical Fitter - Utilities, you'll take on a role that's essential to the safe and reliable running of HMNB Clyde. As the Ministry of Defence's commercial partner, Babcock provides specialist engineering support across critical infrastructure, including the management and maintenance of complex mechanical and nuclear facilities. This is hands-on engineering with a real-world impact. You'll investigate and diagnose faults, keep vital mechanical systems running efficiently, and ensure key infrastructure remains fully operational. Every day will stretch your skills, build your expertise, and offer the satisfaction that your work directly supports national defence.

Day-to-day responsibilities

  • Carrying out planned and reactive maintenance on a wide range of mechanical systems
  • Investigating, diagnosing and repairing faults on diesel generators, LV and HV systems and other mechanical equipment
  • Completing defect identification and repair to maintain operational performance
  • Working to mechanical regulations and following maintenance documentation safely and accurately.

This is a full-time, permanent role, working Monday to Thursday, 36 hours per week, giving you a three-day weekend, based on site at HMNB Clyde Faslane.

Essential experience of the Mechanical Fitter - Utilities

  • Proven experience in mechanical fitting or mechanical maintenance within an industrial or commercial environment
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
  • Confident working safely, with an understanding of statements of work and risk assessments
  • Comfortable working at height and in confined spaces when required.

Qualifications for the Mechanical Fitter - Utilities

Essential Recognised Mechanical Apprenticeship qualified to SVQ Level 3 or equivalent (NVQ Level 3, City)
