Be The Hands-On Engineer Who Keeps the UK’s Nuclear Power Moving

At Cavendish Nuclear we’re working to create a safe and secure world, together, and if you join us, you can play your part as a Field Mechanical Technician.

The role

As a Field Mechanical Technician, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. You’ll operate at the heart of clean energy and national resilience, building, maintaining and restoring high‑integrity mechanical systems that keep reactors and turbine halls performing safely and efficiently.

Day‑to‑day you’ll be required to:

  • Prepare and stage the right tools, spares and equipment for each task, using site‑supplied tools where appropriate.
  • Work safely to legislation, ACoPs and EDF/Cavendish Nuclear procedures—stopping or escalating when conditions aren’t safe.
  • Interpret and execute work to required quality standards, finishing within agreed time and budget.
  • Create and maintain accurate task documentation and records (for example, Assembly and Test Plans).
  • Communicate progress, issues and resolutions clearly with site teams and the customer, asking for support when needed.

Set working times are 37 hours per week: Monday to Wednesday 07:30–18:00, Thursday 07:30–15:00. During outages, you work 12‑hour shifts with paid overtime (time‑and‑a‑half) and a premium (time‑and‑a‑third) for night hours. This is a roving role with regular travel and overnight stays to support EDF power stations at Heysham, Hartlepool and Torness, as well as our Whetstone Manufacturing site; travel and accommodation expenses are provided.

Essential experience of the Field Mechanical Technician:

  • Proven experience in a mechanical technician or mechanical maintenance role in an industrial, utilities, energy or manufacturing setting.
  • Strong fault‑finding, maintenance and repair skills on pumps, valves, gearboxes and associated rotating equipment.
  • Confident with permits to work, isolations/LOTO and working to RAMS in a highly regulated environment.
  • Able to read and work from engineering drawings and technical procedures, producing clear job records.
  • Flexible to travel, work shifts (days/nights) and undertake 12‑hour patterns during outages.

Qualifications for the Field Mechanical Technician:

  • Level 3 engineering qualification (for example, Advanced Apprenticeship, City & Guilds, NVQ Level 3 or equivalent).
  • Security Clearance: The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
