The role

As a Specialist Fire Vehicle Operator, you will have a role that is out of the ordinary. Your work will help ensure that London’s firefighters can respond quickly, safely, and effectively, making a direct impact on operational readiness and community protection. This role also offers exceptional professional development, expanding your expertise in specialist vehicles, training delivery, and assessment methods within an industry that is mission‐led, people‐centred, and continuously innovating.

Day‐to‐day you will be required to:

  • Deliver specialist practical and classroom‐based vehicle equipment training, including operation of emergency‐service vehicles such as aerial ladders.
  • Assess learner competence, provide constructive feedback and maintain accurate training records.
  • Ensure all training is delivered safely and professionally in line with approved course materials, risk assessments, safety policies and safeguarding expectations.
  • Identify and elevate learner welfare concerns where appropriate.
  • Act as a subject‐matter expert, supporting course development and raising improvement opportunities.

Please note that the successful candidate will be required to pass a targeted medical questionnaire and/or medical examination as a condition of employment for this role. This is a full‐time position working 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, based across London. Travel to different Babcock and customer sites around London will be expected.

Salary starts at £43,143.17 and after successful completion of probation rises to £44,941.

Essential experience of the Specialist Fire Vehicle Operator:

  • Fire‐sector specialist vehicle experience and knowledge.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and tablet‐based reporting.
  • Experience using systems and digital tools to deliver outputs effectively.
  • Experience working with aerial ladders, turntable ladders or hydraulic platforms is desirable.

Qualifications for the Specialist Fire Vehicle Operator:

  • DVSA Category C LGV Licence.

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Standard (BPSS) security clearance for this role.
