The role:

As a Principal Independent Peer Review Assessor, you'll play a critical role in safeguarding nuclear and radiological safety across complex defence infrastructure. Operating within the Independent Nuclear Oversight Group, you'll provide objective, expert assurance, challenging decisions, influencing policy, and ensuring the highest standards of compliance. Day-to-day, you'll have the opportunity to combine deep technical expertise with strategic influence. Your work will directly support safe operations, protect people and the environment, and strengthen the UK’s defence capability, while offering exceptional professional growth in a highly respected field.

  • Conducting independent peer reviews of nuclear safety cases, policy, and technical documentation
  • Presenting key findings and insights to senior governance forums, including the Nuclear Safety Committee
  • Managing external consultants engaged in specialist peer review activities
  • Developing and refining methodologies, processes, and 'lessons learned' to strengthen assurance frameworks
  • Collaborating with engineering, safety, and operational leaders to resolve technical challenges and improve safety outcomes

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.

Essential Experience:

  • Demonstrating significant professional experience within nuclear safety or a related high-hazard industry
  • Applying safety analysis techniques such as fault tree analysis, FMECA, and probabilistic or deterministic assessments
  • Developing and managing safety cases, including claims, arguments, and supporting evidence
  • Interpreting complex engineering systems, ideally within naval or defence infrastructure environments
  • Influencing stakeholders through expert advice, technical authority, and independent challenge

Qualifications:

  • Degree in an appropriate scientific or engineering discipline
  • Chartered status with a relevant professional institution
  • Nuclear Safety or Engineering training (or equivalent), such as foundation modules or safety engineering courses

Security Clearance:

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role. Many of the positions within our company are subject to national security clearance and Trade Control restrictions.
