The role:
- As a Maintenance Substantiation Engineer, you’ll be a vital part of our Devonport Engineering Technical Authority team, supporting the Royal Navy’s submarine refit programme.
- Day‑to‑day, you’ll deliver engineering support and maintenance documentation for a wide range of electrical assets across our Nuclear Licensed Site, MOD Authorised Site, and Non‑Nuclear areas.

- Producing and amending maintenance documentation for electrical assets across nuclear and non‑nuclear sites.
- Interpreting drawings, manuals, and safety reports to ensure compliance with statutory legislation and design standards.
- Delivering documentation aligned with Licence Conditions and nuclear safety cases.
- Collaborating with engineering and safety teams to meet project goals.
- Occasionally working in radiologically controlled areas, at height, or in confined spaces (training provided).
- Developing maintenance regimes for a wide range of assets across the site.
- Collaborating with technical authority engineering teams to provide guidance and support.
- Interacting with on‑site maintainers and internal stakeholders to ensure compliance and safety.
- Responding to safety reporting by amending documentation as required.
This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.
Essential Experience Of The Maintenance Substantiation Engineer:
- Proven background in electrical engineering, ideally with maintenance experience.
- Experience in HV/LV systems or control and instrumentation environments.
- Understanding of nuclear safety case substantiation (training provided).
- Ability to work within regulated environments and meet compliance standards.
- Electrical Test and Inspection expertise.
- Background in EC&I, HV/LV systems or Fire Alarm systems.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings and documentation.
- Understanding of electrical legislation.
- Commissioning engineering experience – desirable.
Qualifications For The Maintenance Substantiation Engineer:
- Level 4 qualification in a relevant engineering discipline (Level 3 considered if committed to achieving Level 4 and with relevant experience).
- Higher National Certificate (HNC) in a relevant engineering discipline preferred.
- Candidates with strong field experience and willingness to work towards HNC will be considered.
Security Clearance:
The successful candidate must be a sole UK national who is able to achieve and maintain Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPPI) security clearance for this role. Many of the positions within our company are subject to national security clearance and Trade Control restrictions. This means that your eligibility for certain roles may be affected by your place of birth, nationality, current or former citizenship, and any residency you hold or have held.
