The role
As the Engineering Director, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. You will directly contribute to sustaining engineering support to Naval Operations and the provision of safe, available and capable submarines. You’ll be responsible for providing integrated technical and engineering delivery solutions across Devonport Royal Dockyard. This remit covers complex assets and a highly regulated environment on the licensed site. You’ll ensure that all engineering is aligned to the business objectives, delivers solutions, maintains the right capability and builds relationships and interfaces with our customer.
Day-to-day, the Engineering Director will:
- Provide leadership of the Engineering function to deliver engineering advice and outputs to project and facility operators in Devonport and other customers.
- Have ownership in providing engineering assurance of nuclear and non-nuclear engineering activities.
- Be responsible to the MD for delivery of outputs within approved budgets.
- Be responsible for functional management and development of specific cadres of business critical STEM SQEP and deploying them to customers who will line manage them in pursuit of objectives.
- Responsible for maintaining positive stakeholder relationships across critical domains.
- Responsible for development of processes and the application of digital tools and data architectures to improve the management of complex assets – to improve performance and to inform risk-based engineering decisions.
- Responsible for ensuring Devonport’s interests are considered through routine and regular engagement with the Sector Engineering Function and to be the Devonport Subject Matter Expert in this respect.
This role is full time, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with 3 days in the office/onsite and 2 days working from home. Agile working may be available to employees in some instances, applying the principles of fairness and consistency whilst ensuring that the overriding business needs can be appropriately met. We are happy to consider flexible, blended working, including part-time, condensed hours, and job sharing. Please ask about alternative patterns of work at interview.
Experience Of The Engineering Director
- Experience in significant leadership roles in safety critical/high integrity operations.
- Proven track record of delivering transformational change and engineering efficiency.
- Demonstrable knowledge of programme/infrastructure interactions and interfaces.
- Demonstratable key strengths in collaboration and stakeholder engagement.
- Experience managing multimillion £ budgets and associated resource.
- Nuclear and or/Defence environment experience – desirable.
Qualifications For The Engineering Director
- A Chartered Engineer with significant breadth of experience across complex assets and regulated environments – highly desirable.
