Engineer the systems that keep submarines safe — and shape a career that lasts. At Babcock we’re working to create a safe and secure world, together, and if you join us, you can play your part as a Strategic Systems Engineer at our Devonport Royal Dockyard or Babcock Technology Centre site.

The role

As a Strategic Systems Engineer, you’ll help bring vital submarine systems into service and keep them operating safely through-life. You’ll work directly with MoD Project teams to understand requirements, develop robust engineering processes and documentation and deliver solutions that protect lives and strengthen national security. It’s work with purpose and it will accelerate your development across systems engineering, safety engineering and information assurance in a mission-driven environment.

Day-to-day, you’ll understand the customer’s requirements and needs and provide technical solutions, outputs, and project management in support of the projects you’re allocated.

  • Lead the development and improvement of engineering processes that underpin safety, maintenance and information assurance across strategic submarine systems.
  • Engage with MoD stakeholders to clarify requirements and convert them into deliverable technical outputs and plans.
  • Produce clear, professional documentation from safety analyses and system procedures to process maps and reports.
  • Coordinate technical delivery across mixed professional teams, tracking progress, risks and dependencies to quality, time and cost.
  • Represent Babcock at meetings in the UK and at occasional UK‑US conferences, providing concise updates and insights.

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with 2 days in the office/onsite and 3 days working from home. Travel required to other sites up to twice a month (stay over).

Essential experience of the Strategic Systems Engineer

  • Experience in a customer facing role within a highly regulated industry (e.g. defence, nuclear, aerospace, rail, or energy).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with proven stakeholder management.
  • Demonstrated ability to write and edit professional documentation (reports, processes, procedures).
  • Experience articulating complex technical and project management requirements to diverse audiences.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Qualifications for the Strategic Systems Engineer

  • Degree, Higher National Diploma or Higher National Certificate in engineering or project management (or equivalent experience).
