About the Health & Safety Manager job
The purpose of your role will be to support the company in meeting its Health & Safety requirements. It is a practical, hands-on position focused on improving safety across the manufacturing and packing sites. The job involves coaching teams, supporting managers to take ownership of H&S, and applying risk assessments and legal requirements.
Key tasks:
- Keep policies, procedures, risk assessments, training records, contractor files, certification registers and permits up to date. Make sure the business meets all legal and statutory requirements.
- Visit manufacturing and packing sites to work with managers and teams to improve safety standards, carry out task risk assessments, and make sure safe systems of work are followed.
- Oversee contractor approval, inductions and monitoring. Ensure permits to work are properly issued and controlled so work is carried out safely.
- Arrange and deliver H&S training (inductions, fire safety, manual handling, FLT, working at height). Review policies through gap analysis, report on performance clearly, and keep up to date with legal and best practice changes.
- Support accident investigations, track corrective actions, coordinate emergency procedures and fire drills, support food safety and quality requirements (BRCGS), and deputise for the Quality, Safety and Environmental Manager when required.
About You
The successful candidate shall have at least 5 years' Health & Safety management experience in an FMCG environment. A NEBOSH Diploma is essential. Experience using digital systems for documentation and process records. Lead auditor training and experience is highly desirable. Knowledge of ISO 14000 and ISO 45001 standard is desirable. A background in setting up Health & Safety processes for a new build site would be highly advantageous.

The Health & Safety Manager job is paying £60,000 according to your experience. The package includes 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays, Income protection, Life assurance, Private medical Insurance plus other benefits (Benefits begin subject to 3-6 months service). The site is based in Essex and is commutable from Chelmsford, Witham, Basildon, Maldon, Braintree, Colchester and surrounding areas. The working hours are Monday to Friday and is a 37.5hr working week.
