A Coach Maker (also known as a Coachbuilder) is responsible for the repair, refurbishment, modification, and construction of vehicle bodywork and interiors on buses, coaches, commercial vehicles, and specialist transport equipment. The role involves structural repairs, panel replacement, fabrication, interior fitting, and ensuring vehicles meet safety and operational standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Vehicle Body Repairs
    • Carry out repairs to damaged bus and coach bodywork.
    • Replace and repair panels, floors, roofs, sidewalls, doors, and structural components.
    • Assess vehicle damage and determine appropriate repair methods.
    • Restore vehicles to manufacturer and company standards.
  • Fabrication & Construction
    • Fabricate components using steel, aluminium, and composite materials.
    • Weld, cut, drill, and shape materials as required.
    • Manufacture replacement parts when original components are unavailable.
    • Assist with vehicle conversions and modifications.
  • Interior Refurbishment
    • Repair and replace seating, flooring, handrails, and interior panels.
    • Install and maintain accessibility equipment, including wheelchair ramps.
    • Carry out refurbishment projects to improve vehicle appearance and functionality.
  • Maintenance & Inspection
    • Conduct inspections of vehicle body structures.
    • Identify corrosion, wear, and damage.
    • Complete preventative maintenance and refurbishment activities.
    • Ensure repairs comply with DVSA and operator standards.
  • Documentation & Compliance
    • Complete repair documentation accurately.
    • Follow health and safety procedures at all times.
    • Maintain workshop equipment and tools.
    • Ensure work complies with manufacturer specifications and company policies.

Essential Requirements

  • Previous experience as a Coach Maker, Coachbuilder, Body Repair Technician, or Vehicle Body Builder.
  • Experience working on buses, coaches, HGVs, rail vehicles, or commercial vehicles.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and repair instructions.
  • Knowledge of vehicle body construction techniques.
  • Experience with fabrication and welding.
  • Strong attention to detail and quality standards.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Desirable Requirements

  • NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Vehicle Body Repair, Coachbuilding, Fabrication, or equivalent.
  • MIG/TIG welding qualifications.
  • PSV, Bus, Coach, or Commercial Vehicle experience.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • IRTEC accreditation (advantageous).
