Senior Structural Engineer – North Yorkshire

I’m working with a well‑established engineering consultancy looking to recruit an experienced Senior Structural Engineer to join its growing team. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated structural engineer with around 4–9 years of relevant experience to take ownership of projects, oversee complex structural designs and support the development of junior engineers. Working across a varied portfolio of residential, commercial, industrial, educational and waste management projects.

Your Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage structural engineering projects from initial design through to completion, ensuring delivery to programme and required technical standards.
  • Oversee and check complex structural designs, calculations and engineering solutions.
  • Provide technical expertise in reinforced concrete and steel structures, foundations and wider structural engineering works.
  • Review structural designs and AutoCAD drawings, ensuring accuracy, compliance and coordination across project disciplines.
  • Support civil engineering elements of projects, including drainage design, platform levels, earthworks and foundation solutions.
  • Use structural design software, including Tekla and other relevant engineering analysis and design packages.
  • Support and mentor junior engineers, providing technical guidance, reviewing their work and helping develop their capabilities.
  • Assist with workload planning and allocation, working closely with the team and supporting Ben with project delivery and resource management.
  • Liaise with clients, contractors, architects and other consultants to resolve technical issues and deliver coordinated designs.
  • Contribute to a varied portfolio of projects across residential, commercial, industrial, educational and waste management sectors.

About You

  • A degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • Approximately 4–9 years of relevant structural engineering experience, ideally within a consultancy environment.
  • Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or actively working towards Chartership with a relevant professional institution, ideally ICE or IStructE.
  • Strong technical experience in structural design, particularly reinforced concrete and steel structures.
  • Experience reviewing calculations, checking complex designs and reviewing AutoCAD drawings.
  • Familiarity with structural design and analysis software, ideally including Tekla and relevant engineering design packages.
  • An understanding of drainage and wider civil engineering design would be highly beneficial.
  • Experience managing projects, coordinating design work and supporting junior engineers.
  • Strong communication, organisational and problem-solving skills, with the confidence to take ownership of technical decisions.
  • Ideally based within a reasonable commuting distance of the North Yorkshire office and comfortable working predominantly from the office.

What’s on Offer?

  • Salary: £40,000–£55,000, depending on experience and suitability.
  • Flexible working hours: Choose a start time between 7:30 am and 10:00 am, with corresponding finish times between 4:30 pm and 7:00 pm.
  • Early Friday finish: The opportunity to finish at 3:30 pm on Fridays, provided your work is completed.
  • Hybrid working: There may be the option to work from home one day per week.
  • Career progression: An opportunity to take ownership of projects, develop technical leadership skills and progress towards or beyond Chartership.
  • Technical responsibility: Work on complex structural designs while helping shape the quality and delivery of projects.
  • Team leadership: Support and mentor junior engineers while contributing to the wider team's success.
  • Varied projects: Gain exposure to residential, commercial, industrial, educational and waste management developments.
