A human-centric, planet-conscious engineering consultancy delivering intelligent and sustainable solutions to the built environment is looking to appoint a Principal Sustainability Consultant with an energy focus, to join their Sustainability team and South West Business Unit. The role can be based from either the Cardiff or Bristol office.
This is a rare opportunity to join an industry-leading sustainability discipline, known for its dynamic, innovative approach to sustainable design, construction, and building operation - offering the chance to grow not just your own career, but the industry's approach to the field as a whole.
The Role:
- Acting as Discipline Project Lead for medium to large scale projects across all RIBA stages, including delivery of documents supporting outline and detailed planning submissions.
- Acting as Workstream Lead, taking ownership of delivery and supporting senior team members on large scale projects.
- Developing and coordinating resource and project plans, leading client and design team workshops, and communicating clearly and concisely.
- Undertaking and supporting detailed analyses including energy compliance calculations (Building Regulations Part L, EPCs), advanced building performance modelling (overheating/thermal comfort, operational energy assessment), energy strategies in support of planning, and Net Zero carbon assessments.
- Supporting technical excellence communities and the mentoring/training of junior team members.
- Potential involvement in wider workstreams such as whole life carbon and environmental assessment.
What's Required:
- Experience within sustainability consultancy, with a focus on energy and building performance.
- Advanced simulation capabilities, including Building Regulations Part L assessments (Elmhurst, IES), EPCs, Part O assessments, thermal comfort, and operational energy assessment (CIBSE TM54, ApacheSIM, ApacheHVAC).
- Demonstrable experience in project leadership and resource planning.
- Experience training or mentoring junior team members.
- A track record delivering successful planning applications and collaborating with local authorities (local and London market experience advantageous).
- Qualified and recognised in industry, preferably working towards or holding Chartered status.
- Strong communication skills and confidence leading energy workshops with design teams.
- Experience working with clients, contractors, and architects in a design-oriented consultancy role.
Advantageous:
- NABERS UK Design for Performance experience.
- Parametric building/energy performance analysis (e.g. Rhino).
- Passivhaus (PHPP) experience.
- Experience developing fee proposals.
- Line management experience.
