We’re looking for an experienced Corporate Credit Underwriting Manager to join our Risk Operations team, located in Lyde Green, Bristol (BS16 7LB) to manage a small team of underwriters decisioning on large lending applications (£500k to £5m). This role ensures credit decisions are made consistently, fairly and in line with Group policy and risk appetite, while delivering a strong customer experience.
You’ll be responsible for credit quality, decision‑making standards, service levels and team performance while working closely with Credit Risk and Compliance to ensure policies and controls are applied effectively.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage a Corporate Credit underwriting team, including performance and development of colleagues.
- Oversee the end‑to‑end credit opinion process for handoff to the 2LOD team for validation.
- Deliver “right first time” decision‑making.
- Act as the main point of contact for credit‑related escalations from Commerce Colleagues.
- Manage workflows to deliver agreed service levels and quality standards.
- Maintain clear audit trails and robust credit documentation.
- Complete regular quality checks, controls and credit reviews.
- Keep credit policies and procedures up to date and recommend improvements to improve customer journey.
- Support and deliver projects that improve credit processes.
- Build strong working relationships across credit, risk, compliance and relationship teams.
Skills & Experience:
- Proven experience leading a Corporate Credit team or similar.
- Experience assessing and managing credit risk, including complex cases.
- Credit mandate in existing or a previous role of £1m plus sign off.
- Ability to interpret financial information and data for complex company structures.
- Good knowledge of UK lending practices.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to influence stakeholders.
- Highly organised, with the ability to plan and prioritise in a fast‑paced environment.
- Track record of delivering service, quality and productivity targets.
