We specialise in the self-delivery of high-quality asphalt surfacing works and as part of our continued growth, we are seeking an experienced and commercially astute Asphalt Surfacing Estimator to join our team based in Surrey.
This is a key appointment and offers the opportunity to work within a committed and professional environment where quality, safety, and operational excellence are central to everything we do.
The Role
Reporting directly to senior management, the successful candidate will be responsible for preparing accurate and competitive estimates for asphalt surfacing projects, predominantly within the highways and infrastructure sectors. You will play an integral part in the pre-construction process, liaising with clients, suppliers, and delivery teams to ensure efficient and commercially viable proposals.
Key Responsibilities
- Preparation of detailed cost estimates for surfacing and associated works, ensuring accuracy and alignment with client requirements and industry standards.
- Interpret and assess contract documents, specifications, drawings, and technical information to compile compliant tenders.
- Liaise with supply chain partners for pricing of plant, materials, subcontract services, and labour.
- Conduct site assessments and pre-tender visits to evaluate project complexity and logistical considerations.
- Identify value engineering opportunities and commercial risks.
- Assist in post-tender negotiations and pre-contract handover to delivery teams.
- Maintain a strong working knowledge of market rates, materials, and best practice in surfacing methodologies.
- Keep estimating systems and databases up to date with pricing and project history.
Essential Requirements
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in asphalt surfacing or civil engineering estimating (Highways sector).
- Strong understanding of asphalt materials, applications, laying techniques, and highways specifications (e.g., SHW, CDM, and Chapter 8 compliance).
- Proven track record of preparing estimates for surfacing works on local authority, highways, and commercial contracts.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and estimating software (such as Causeway, Candy, or similar systems).
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to attend sites across the Southeast.
- Exceptional attention to detail, commercial awareness, and time management skills.
- You must have the legal right to live and work in the UK. Applications from outside the UK will not be considered.
