Job Description

Job Title: SysOps Engineer

Industries: Fintech, Legaltech, Edutech

Location: Eastbourne, UK (hybrid working)

We're looking for a thoughtful, automation-driven SysOps Engineer to join our infrastructure team, as part of the wider engineering team at AxisOps. This role is central to how we build, ship, and secure systems – enabling product teams to move fast without breaking things, and delivering operational stability that just works.

You’ll be working at the intersection of infrastructure, automation, and security – helping us scale and secure our internal platform, Andromeda, reduce toil through code, and evolve the pipelines that power everything. If you love clean automation, infrastructure-as-code, containerisation, and deeply understand the value of reliable systems and clear documentation, this one’s for you.

Who we are

AxisOps is a consultancy-led software engineering business that designs, builds, and operates intelligent software platforms. We work with fast-moving organisations in the Fintech, Legaltech, and Edutech sectors to deliver automation, infrastructure, and compliance-ready solutions that scale.

We partner closely with our clients to navigate complexity and bring ideas to life – from design and architecture through to production and operations. Our strength lies in software delivery, supported by deep expertise in platform engineering, built on an understanding of private cloud-native infrastructure, observability, and DevSecOps.

Our culture

We value sharp thinking, clear communication, and teams that look out for each other. At AxisOps, our core values are:

  • Ingenuity – solving hard problems with elegant tools
  • Diligence – building properly, testing deeply, documenting clearly
  • Accountability – owning outcomes, not just tasks
  • Social Responsibility – writing code and designing systems that serve humans and society in an AI world

We don’t do hype. We do repeatable infrastructure, design-first thinking, and clear feedback loops. You’ll be part of a team that believes good engineering culture is built one decision at a time.

What you’ll be doing

  • Automate infrastructure using Terraform and Ansible, following modern DevSecOps and infrastructure-as-code practices
  • Operate secure-by-default infrastructure, embedding security and compliance directly into provisioning, pipelines, and runtime environments
  • Support containerised services across production, staging, and dev using Docker (some exposure to Kubernetes concepts or other container runtimes is welcome but not required)
  • Maintain and evolve microservice architecture built in Python and PHP, with deployment via GitLab CI/CD and runtime orchestration via Andromeda
  • Deliver observability using Prometheus, Grafana, and the ELK stack, supporting metrics, logs, and alerting workflows
  • Support and maintain internal ML infrastructure and pipelines, helping ensure that our AI and data workloads run securely and efficiently
  • Work closely with the Data and ML teams, assisting with environment design, pipeline execution, model deployment, and optimising resource use – where needed
  • Manage Proxmox-hosted Linux VMs, including transition from legacy VMware, golden images, and underlying hypervisor maintenance
  • Build and maintain standardised developer desktop environments, supporting our engineering team’s daily tooling and dev workflow
  • Contribute to our IoT platform, including reliable edge infrastructure, secure messaging, and data flow observability
  • Support and maintain our private datacentre, including rack-level hardware, networking, and server fleet resilience
  • Continuously improve security posture, covering patching, firewall maintenance, secrets handling, and backup strategy
  • Write markdown-based SOPs, runbooks, and infra playbooks that are used, tested, and evolved
  • Work in regulated environments, including audit trail design, SBOM production, and CI-driven vulnerability/pentest workflows
  • Collaborate closely with software engineers to make infrastructure serve delivery, not slow it down

Note: this role requires you to work from our Eastbourne (UK) office Tuesday-Thursday every week (Mondays and Fridays can be remote).

What you’ll bring

Required:

  • Deep Linux system administration experience with containerised workloads (Docker)
  • Fluency in scripting and automation – Python, Bash, and Ansible (our glue language)
  • Familiarity with Terraform or equivalent infra-as-code tooling
  • Real-world experience operating hybrid environments (on-prem, AWS, Azure)
  • Strong networking fundamentals: routing, firewalls, VPNs, switching
  • A security-first mindset, with practical exposure to vulnerability management and secure provisioning
  • Clear written communication – your runbooks don’t need walkthroughs
  • Familiarity with datacentre hardware: racking, patching, switch config, server diagnostics
  • Proactive problem-solving skills and the ability to improve systems independently

Preferred but not required:

  • Degree in computer science, engineering, or a related technical field
  • Certifications like LFCS, Terraform Associate, or Red Hat’s Ansible Automation Specialist are a plus – we care more about what you can do than what you’ve memorised
  • Experience with RabbitMQ, Traefik, or service mesh tooling
  • Familiarity with Laravel, FastAPI, and modern container-based web application stacks
  • Working knowledge of PostgreSQL, including administration and performance tuning
  • Exposure to key PostgreSQL extensions such as:
  • pgvector, timescaledb, postgis
  • Experience with GitLab or Dagger-based CI/CD pipelines
  • Familiarity with BCDR planning, site reliability engineering practices, and performance tuning

Why join us?

At AxisOps, you’ll be hands-on with real systems, working alongside a sharp engineering team that values context, clarity, and well-designed infrastructure. As a SysOps Engineer, you will:

  • Shape how we scale and secure our platform
  • Be trusted to make technical decisions and challenge assumptions
  • Own infrastructure capabilities that support regulated industries
  • Help bring DevSecOps thinking into every layer of delivery

Our benefits

  • Financial wellbeing: A competitive salary, optional salary sacrifice pension, and a flexible benefits platform that stretches your money further – from high street discounts and gym memberships to free financial guidance and salary sacrifice options like Childcare Vouchers and Electric Vehicle leasing
  • Work-life balance: 28 days of holiday, including bank holidays, to help you recharge and unwind
  • Great kit: A high-spec laptop and screen as standard, with the option of additional high-spec kit for home office use
  • Flexibility: Tuesday-Thursday in our newly refurbished Eastbourne office, complete with a selection of drinks and snacks, Monday and Friday working from home
  • Wellness: Access to an Employee Assistance Portal and online GP appointments when you need support
  • Belonging: Regular opportunities to connect, including monthly Insight Hours, team lunches, and our annual summer and Christmas socials
