As part of the AXIS Compliance team, you will play a key role in delivering financial crime compliance oversight across multiple legal entities within AXIS Capital Group. Operating within the second line, you will provide guidance and effective challenge to the business, supporting adherence to applicable regulatory requirements.
The primary focus of this role is to support the management and oversight of sanctions, including involvement in sanctions referrals, monitoring regulatory and geopolitical developments, providing timely and practical guidance to the business, overseeing screening activities, and supporting regulatory reporting. You will be responsible for ensuring that sanctions controls are effective, consistently applied, and continue to evolve in line with regulatory expectations and business needs.
Alongside this core responsibility, you will contribute to broader financial crime processes and play a key role in enhancing the Financial Crime Framework, particularly in relation to sanctions controls and processes. The role operates with a degree of autonomy, while working closely with, and reporting to, the Financial Crime Specialist, who retains overall oversight.
What will you do in this role?
- Sanctions (Primary Focus)
- Lead the review and assessment of sanctions referrals across underwriting, claims and other business areas, providing clear, risk-based guidance and documented rationale.
- Own the day-to-day oversight of sanctions screening processes, including review and escalation of potential matches and ensuring appropriate follow-up actions.
- Act as a key point of contact for the business on sanctions-related queries, providing timely, practical and commercially aware guidance.
- Assess sanctions risk in complex scenarios, including indirect exposures, multi-jurisdictional considerations and potential circumvention risks.
- Maintain and enhance sanctions controls and procedures, ensuring they remain aligned to regulatory developments and business needs.
- Support the management of sanctions-related incidents and regulatory disclosures, including coordination with relevant stakeholders.
- Framework, Oversight & Reporting
- Take ownership of key components of the Sanctions and Financial Crime Framework, supporting its ongoing development, implementation and enhancement.
- Deliver sanctions reporting to senior management, committees and regulators, ensuring outputs are accurate, clear and provide meaningful insight.
- Lead elements of sanctions horizon scanning, assessing regulatory and legal developments and translating these into practical guidance for the business.
- Support assurance reviews led by Compliance Operations.
- Process Improvement & Projects
- Identify, recommend and implement process improvements, enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of sanctions controls.
- Support delivery of sanctions and financial crime projects and initiatives, including system enhancements, control improvements and policy updates.
- Act as a contact for third-party providers and tools (e.g. screening systems), overseeing day-to-day effectiveness and performance.
- Stakeholder Engagement & Culture
- Build strong relationships with stakeholders across underwriting, claims and operations, acting as a trusted advisor on sanctions matters.
- Provide guidance and informal oversight to junior team members, supporting their technical development where appropriate.
- Promote a strong compliance culture, proactively identifying risks, raising awareness and encouraging adherence to policies and procedures.

About You:

What you need to have:
- Good understanding of UK, EU and US sanctions regimes, including practical application within an insurance or Lloyd’s market context.
- 3–5 years’ experience in compliance within the insurance / reinsurance / Lloyd’s market, including at least 2 years’ experience in financial crime and/or sanctions roles.
- Demonstrated experience managing sanctions referrals and making risk-based decisions, including documenting clear rationale.
- Experience operating with a degree of autonomy, managing competing priorities and delivering key processes independently.
- Good understanding of wider financial crime frameworks, including AML, ABC and fraud risks.
- Familiarity with sanctions screening tools and processes (e.g. Finscan).
