We are seeking an experienced Locum Property Lawyer to support the Legal Services team at Ipswich Borough Council on a fully remote basis. This is a key opportunity to provide high-quality legal advice and transactional support across a wide range of local authority property matters, working closely with officers, Heads of Legal Services, and Council stakeholders.
Key responsibilities:
- Providing clear, accurate legal advice (oral and written) to members and officers of the Council
- Advising on a broad range of local authority property matters and undertaking transactional casework in line with Council policies
- Drafting, negotiating and advising on commercial leases, licences, easements, wayleaves and related documentation
- Handling acquisitions, disposals, settlements and wider estate management matters
- Attending and advising at Council meetings, committees and sub-committees (including occasional evening meetings where required)
- Vetting committee reports, ensuring legal compliance, risk awareness and alignment with Council decision-making processes
- Taking instructions, issuing documentation, negotiating settlements and managing transactional matters within delegated authority
- Using case management, time recording and electronic records systems effectively to manage workflow and reporting
- Attending court, tribunals or public inquiries where required, acting as legal advisor
- Supporting Heads of Legal Services and assisting in developing team capability where appropriate
Requirements:
- Qualified Solicitor, Barrister or FILEX/CILEX Lawyer (or equivalent experience in a property specialism)
- Strong background in property law (commercial and/or public sector experience essential)
- Previous local authority or housing association experience highly desirable
- Proven ability to manage a varied and complex caseload independently
- Strong drafting, negotiation and advisory skills
- Experience advising on legal risk, policy interpretation and transactional matters
- Confident working with internal stakeholders and senior decision-makers
- Ability to work effectively in a fully remote locum environment
